YIELD OF THE KENTUCKY FIELD OF RACING IN THE MEM0R- f ABLE CAMPAIGN OF THIS YEAR j As is customary, Latbnia led the Kentucky tracks this year in the gross total of money returned to owners, but was secoad to Churchill. Downs in daily average distribution. In the grand total distributed the Kentucky racing field showed an increase of 02,699 over 1915. This increase was mainly the result of the order of the Kentucky State Racing Commission prescribing a minimum value of purses. There have been rumors that one consequence was that the Kentucky tracks were operated at a loss this year. Of the truth or untruth of this only the officials of. the various organizations are informed. Probably it was untrue. Xo alL outward appearances all the meetings were so well patronized that a profit must have been realized, even if not so great as in preceding vears. However, while at is possible that the years results may have given the track officials and stockholders legitimate grounds for a bit of grumbling, it is apparent the owners who raced their horses over the Kentucky tracks have no right to anything but directly opposite sentiments. The racing was never better and left little ta be desired. Conditions were so well considered and devised that any owner of a horse ab e to run a lit e bit was sure tp share in the money output. Horses of high class were frequently in action and the deeds of Dodge, Ed Crump, George Smith, Harry Kelly, Kathleen, Pif Jr America, Chalmers Embroidery Westy Hogan. Hodge, Auriga, Star Hawk, Bayberry Candle, Water-blossom, Bringhurst Vogue ami others of great speed or marked stamina, or both combined, served to entertain and delight thousands of admiring patrons. Quite sure it is that no better """.I general ti.jn.rai brand orauu oi of racing was ever witnessed in Kentucky tiian that of 1910. Among the owners John W. Schorr was first in stable earnings and has good reason to view his share in Kentucky racing with much complacency. One of the three great prizes of me field, the valuable Kentucky Handicap, of the net value of 1,050, was his through the speed and dauntless gameness of his sturdy campaigner Ed Crump. W. H. Baker came in second to Mr. Schorr with a highly satisfacton-total to Ins credit and R L Baker was a prosperous third. The eastern turfman, John Sanfords foray was brief, but winning the Kentucky Derby was certainly ample justification and recompense for the excursion. J. Umensetter, Thomas C. McDowell, Jefferson Livingston, A. K. Macomber. Weber and Ward George J. Long . Adair and Baker. J. S. Hawkins, Williams Bros, and W. J. Weber were other turfmen lurlmen who garnered 0,000 or more as their reward for participating in Kentuckys favorite sport. Details of the Kentucky campaign arc given minutely in the following statistical tabulations. Tliev are worth careful inspection and bear eloquent testimony to the high importance the state has attained a l ulu as a home of the greatest of open-air diversions.
