NEW YORK BOOKMAKER HEAVILY FINED. New York, November 17. Leonard Davis of 25S West Forty-sixth street, Manhattan, was found guilty of bookmaking Wednesday, before a jury in the Nassau County Court. Judge J. P. Neimann presiding. Davis Avas fined 00. or three months in the county jail. He paid the fine. Davis was tried some months ago and conducted his own case. The result was a disagreement by the jury. District Attorney-elect Charles R. AVeeks, who conducted the trial, contended that Davis was openly soliciting, inasmuch as he was calling. "Come on, sports; Black and White to win." Davis former sheet writer, who testified that lm hnd been assisting Davis, contended that he wns only taking bets from friends, which is permitted under the law. This, district attorney Weeks proved to the jury Avas otherwise. This is the first conviction in Nassau County for bookmaking. Davis Avas arrested at Belmont Park last spring.
