DEEDS OF OLD SHORT GRASS IN RACING. lShdrtrass, the VelleItairrand1rilCTi1iIiT Avon so many races this year for E. Herz and is soon to be retired to the stud, has had an unusual career in the success that he achieved after reaching the age before Avhich most race horses are retired. As an eight-year-old this year he won more races than in any previous season and more money than in all his previous races combined, and yet he had been racing from a two-venr-old on. The horse has shown an almost s"teadilv-lmproving record since coming into the possession of his present owner, Avhich occurred early in the horses five-year-old career, although his three-year-old season was his third best yeaiv Short Grass, which is a bay horse by Laveno -Outburst, av.is bred by Joseph Whelan in Ireland, and raced for that gentleman in Ireland during all of his two-year-old and a part of his three-year-old career. His two-year-old adventures Avere not startling, with five unplaced marks out of six races, but he broke out of the maiden class in the Tyro Plate at Carragh on October 18, 1910. and, upon entering his three-year-old form, began to show decided improvement. After two impressive spring races, in which he Avon bv good margins, he Avas bought by Mr. G. A. Prentice, obviously Avith the hope of winning the Irish Derby on June 2S, but Short Grass proved a disappointment in this feature, finishing far back in the nick in a Derby won by Shanballymore. which Short Grass had easily beaten in his opening race as a three-year-old. Subsequently, however, Short Grass won two good races for Mr. Prentice as a three-year-old, and then, upon entering his four-year-old career, Avas taken across to England, but had a poor season, although competing in some of the big handicaps of the year, being placed third but once in five starts. As a five-year-old he did better and began to show the promise which had its greatest fruition three years later, but owner Prentice got but little of the benefit of it. The horses first victory as a five-year-old av.is in the Kiddlesdown Selling Plate at Epsom and, after the race, he was bought by Emil Herz for ,070. and from that time on Avon three races and ,755 that year for his new owner. Mr. Herz then brought Short Grass to the United States and his record in this country in 1914, 1915 and 191G is familiar to American followers of turf affairs. In all. Short Grass has started eighty-four times, has Avon twenty-two races, the great majority of them handicaps, and lias brought a total of 0,510 to his owners in the way of money earnings, of AAhicli 5,060 has gone into the coffers of Mr. Herz.
