ENGLANDS DEBT TO THE THOROUGHBRED. Horse-breeding is of quite as great national importance as the production of milk, pork or eggs, and it may be well to point once more that had it not been for the breeding of thoroughbreds the hunting stables of Britain would never have been able to furnish the tens of thousands of horses they did when war was declared, for the use of the army. Without thoroughbreds as the foundation ther- would have been no half-bred hunters to be called upon, but as things were, I believe I am not overstepping the mark in saying that something like 70,000 horses with thoroughbred blood in their veins were commandeered for the defense of the realm. A host of these were of incalcuable value in the early stages of the war and afterwards, and a time will inevitably come when more and more horses will be required, especially for cavalry and field artillery purposes.
