NAMING OF TWO FAMOUS RACERS. The naming of horses sometimes give rise to good stories. It was said that one bright spring morning two colts were born at Elmendorf, in Kontucky, the home of Colonel D. D. Swigert. Mrs. Swigert happened to visit the . city on that day and made several purchases, which she displayed to herx lord and master on her return home. Colonel Swigert never had a reputation for excessive generosity, and when he viewed the result of his wifes shopping expedition, he waxed somewhat wrathy. "I was just thinking of naming those thoroughbred colts, madam," said he, "and I think I shall name one of them in your honor. I shall call him Spendthrift." "A thousand thanks, Colonel," retorted the sprightly gentlewoman. "A thousand thank?, and I presume you will be gallant enough to permit me to name the other one?" "Certainly, madam," retorted the owner of Elmendorf, tartly. "Well, that being the case. Colonel." resumed the lndy, "I shall name the other one for you and call him Miser." Spendthrift turned out to be among the best evOr seen on the American turf.
