NO BARGAIN EVEN FOR A SCOTCHMAN. New York, December 1-1. A good story is told about A. McL. Earlocker, popular racing secretary of the Belmont and Saratoga tracks. Earlocker is Scotch and has all the inherited thrift of his people. Recently he had a chance of a bargain, however, of which he was not anxious to take advantage. He has a home out near the Empire City track and was taking a party of friends out for dinner. When the train on which the little party was making its .suburban way drew into Fordhnm, there was a sudden wheezing of airbrakes and crunching of wheels and a quick stop. When the passengers had untangled themselves and looked out to discover what the trouble might be, it was discovered that a pair of horses had been killed and a fire engine was wrecked on the track. There was no chance of the train going on its way in time for the dinner, and Mr. Earlocker went in search of a taxicab or some other conveyance. To make the situation all the more pleasant, there was rain falling through the frosty air. Also there was no conveyance to be found near the spot where the train was stalled. Finally a flivver was found, but when the party attempted to commandeer the conveyance there was some demur. After some delay the man in the flivver agreed to carry Mr. McL. Earlocker and his friends on to where the dinner was in danger of getting cold. The driver of the little car proved a most amiable and friendly soul and accepted an invitation to come within the Earlocker domicile and take refreshment. After seeing the driver of the car pour liberally and hear him express his satisfaction and gratification over the liquid refreshment furnished, Secretary Earlocker tendered money payment for the ride. "No, I couldnt think of charging you anything," protested the man with the flivver. "Im not a jitiiey bus man. Im an undertaker and had just driven down to the wreck to see if I could pick up any business. Thanks for the drinks. Heres my card and I hope I may be able to do something for you in my line. 111 treat you right if youll just remember me and call on me if you happen to need anything."
