Edith Lyons Takes the Opening Dash Maud Bacon Proves Herself an Exceptionally Good Mud Runner Biff Crowd Present. Tijuana, Mcx., December 25. Slippery Elm bad iio trouble in winning the Christmas Handicap, the feature race here today. The little Wingflcld gelding made every post a winning one and was pulled ii several lengths to the good at the finish. The only contender in the race appeared in Sasin, but his effort in the stretch was weak. Star of Love was a poor third. The davs sport onened with a victory for the five-year-old mare Edith Lyons, which swung wide into the good going when entering the stretch and wore Virginia S. down in the final strides. The latter ran a good race, but labored in the going. The favorite, Miss Jean, was outrun all the way. Maud Bacon, a superior mud runner, revelled in the going, opened a big lead in the second race, and won as her rider pleased. Set Square, away slowly, made up ground fast and finished resolutely. Followers of form were rewarded in the third race when Jennie Crawford, after racing Inquieta into defeat in the early running, drew out decisively in the stretch and won easily. Inquieta finished gamely for second place. Jake Argent ran back to his last good race to win the fifth race today. After shaking off Shaban carlv, lie rushed into a big lead and won cantering. Roseoe Troxler continues to scintillate among the riders. He rode two more winners again today. A large crowd was present, many visitors coming from distant parts of California. The weather was exceptionally cold.
