Sallie ODay Takes the Opener Hondo Defeats Rod Deer, but with Some Difficulty Vested Rights in Front. El Paso, Tex., .December 25. A high wind began to blow here this morning and by one oclock had whipped itself into a gale, blowing the roofs off of two of the sheds in front of the stables. By the time the horses went to the post, however, it had abated. It did not deter a large holiday crowd from crossing the Rio Grande to witness the afternoons sport. A rousing finish featured the opening dash, when Sallie ODay, after being reserved in the early running, came on the outside and, overhauling Peter Grimm in the final strides, got the decision by a nose. The second race went to the hot favorite Hondo, which held the lead all the way, but was tiring perceptibly near the finish and was lucky to win. Red Deer was closing up fast and would haver won in a few strides more. Arested Rights sprinted to the front early in the third and maintained a safe advantage throughout. Clara James was a fast-finishing second. The fifth saw the defeat of the warm favorite, Jefferson, which tired badly after setting the pace to the stretch, quitting badly at the end. Bunch of Keys, which had been in forward pursuit throughout, finished with a whirlwind rush and won oh". Buck Nail and W. AV. Clark were most fancied in the last race, but the latter was dull of speed today and ran poorly. Buck Nail was held under restraint until a quarter out, when he moved into the lead and increased his advantage with every stride, winning pulled up. Bert L. and Smiling Mag finished well. Clumsy Kate was claimed by King and Faussct for 25. Dick Monahan. a sporting writer of Reno, Nov.. was an arrival today and contemplates staying all winter.
