HOW FREELAND CHANGED HANDS. The following story is told by Thomas Gallagher of Edward Corrigan, when the "master of Hawthorn" was cutting a big figure on the turf: "I was in I-ouisville the night before Leonatus won the Kentucky Derby," said Gallagher. "It was then that Big Ed bought a little filly from Mr. Clav named Golden Rod. I was present when lie closed the deal for Golden Rod, whose name ne afterward changed to Modesty, the winner of the first American Derby in 1SS4. "That same night Corrigan remarked to me that ho had just bought a horse and that the owner was keeping away from him because it was believed that the animal was hopelessly broken down. " I know hes avoiding me, said Corrigan, because he thinks hes stung me in a trade; but Im putting my own judgment against these Ken-tuckians. "The man to whom Corrigan referred was Col. F. B. Harper, and the supposed cripple which ! had changed hands was Froelnnd, which later proved , to lie one of the greatest race horses the country , ever saw. and which justified Coirigans good opinion of his own judgment against the Kon-tuekiais.
