NEW MARYLAND TRACK GETS CHARTER. Enterprise at Bengies Will Be Permitted to Issue 350,000 of Capital Stock. Baltimore, Md., December 25. The promoters of the new race track, to be established at Bengies, in this county, are now-assured of plain sailing so far as permission to conduct race meetings in the state goes. At a recent meeting of the state tax commissioners, an order was entered approving the application of the new Association for a charter to conduct race meetings. The charter was asked under an amendment to the charter of the old East Baltimore Driving Associations charter. Under this amendment the new association will be permitted to issue 50,000 of capital stock, and the promoters have interested a number of local men in the new venture. The new association has won out on its application for a charter after some opposition. Efforts were made to block the move when it was known that Al Herford, former manager of the late Joe Gnus, negro lightweight fighter, was one of those chleflv interested. Persons connected with other race tracks and devotees of racing in these parts entertained the idea that any increase in the number of racing days would result in the enactment of laws adverse to racing in this state. It is not known what dates will be applied for by the new association, and the general opinion in these parts is that inasmuch as Maryland already has as many racing days as New York, the sport is being abused in this section. Should there be any conflict between the new association and those alreadv conducting meetings in this section, it is feared that laws may be passed that will do away altogether with the sport. It is regarded as reasonably certain that the new company will not spend to the limit of its capitalization. Hence the promoters of the Bengies track are not believed to be in risk of losing much, even if the next legislature should close all the race tracks. i
