STAKES TO PLEASUREVILLE TAKES THE COSMOPOLITAN HOTEL HANDICAP EASILY WITH CLIFF FIELD SECOND. Fine Weather Brings Out a Big Crowd But Track Is Still Bad — Hubbub Defeats Brynlimah — Track Gossip. New Orleans. La., January 27. — There was a decided Improvement in the racing at the Fair Groonda this afternoon. The- attendance was iii keeping with other Saturday crowds and the weather, though cloudy, was of the summer variety. The Cosmopolitan Hotel Handicap at a mile aiul an eighth was the feature from :t monetary viewpoint. ,800 being added to it. and a silver cup also went to the winner, donated by the hotel company for which the race was named. Pleasurevilh-. the favorite, turned up the winin-r with Cliff Field in second plaee and Herbert Temple third. The handicap at one mile held out more interest lie-cause of the better grade of starters in it. Hubbub, which apt. w. J. Press recently acqnired from the Creentree Stable, proved the winner from Rryn-liniah and Rob Hensley with Syrian following. Hubbub led for the entire way and easily withstood Rrynlimaha game stretch challenge. Syrians showing was a dull one and he can be rated as .in in anil outer. R. L. Raker scored his first victory of the meeting when Dr. Carmen won iu easy fashion in the sixth race. The horses victory must have- netted the owner handsomely for he was heavily backed. Joe 1. was another that enabled the Kentuckians to add to their winnings, when he got up in the last stride to defeat Thomas Callaway. Souvenirs success in the second race was a meritorious effort, for after being virtually left with Valas at the post, she- gained steadily and wore Easter Greetings down in the last eighth to win going away. Lady Ward, another favorite, won the third tinder slight re-straint. Hauberk had to be excused from starting, because of track eeuielitions. Dr. Larrick is the latest to join the ailing list and will not be it starter again for some time-. In a full page aelvertisement addrc-sseel to the public- in three of the local newspapers, and signed by President McDiarmid. the Rusiness Mens Racing Association reiterates that it is operating its present meeting under similar conditions that governed tin- siKirt during the season of 1915-10. It also maintains that it is ope-rating strictly within tin- law and challenged any proof to the eemtrary. It also states that should any inilividual violate any of the provisions of the I.ocke law, the association will do everything in its power to aid in his prosecution and conviction. Moss Fox was claimed by W. C. Weant for ,050 after the last race. Eighteen horses were nominated to the Grune-wald Hotel Handicap, to lie run next Saturday, for which entries close this afternoon. George Loft is the latest owner desirous of obtaining jockey MeTaggarfa •ervieea for the season of 1917. The rider will probably sign with John Sanford to ride the members of his extensive stable. The good colt Mustard, that trainer Jerry Carroll brought here, is said to have gone- amiss and will be- se-nt to Kentucky to lie rested for a while-.
