HOTEL GRUNEWALD HANDICAP TO HAUBERK. Defeats Hanovia in Easy Fashion — Track Improves and Big Crowd Present. New Orleans. La., February 3. — The most spirited racing seen here in weeks was witnessed by a big Saturday throng this afternoon at the Fair Orounds. Cold, wind and sunshine combined to help the track to dry materially and it was in fairly good condition during the afternoon, with every prospect of it continuing to improve, under the constant labors of a big force of men and track implements. The Oruuewalel Hotel Handicap, with ,000 added, at a mile anil a sixteenth, and a sprint handicap at three-quarters, featured a fairly good offering of seven races. Most of the dashes wound up in close finishes and accounted for considerable enthusiasm. Hauberk was returned the winner in the feature, which netted his owner 35 and a handsome silver shield, the gift of the hotel company the race was named for. Hanovia. Diamond and Orumpy divided betting favoritism. Hauberk, in the light of his poor showing in a recent race, being neglected by the public, although the talent gave him considerable attention. He disposed of Orumpy, the early leader, with ease after going a half mile, and withstood the challenge offered by Hanovia in easy fashion. Dr. Carmen gave the Kentuckians a severe jolt in the three-i|iiarters handicap by his failure to finish better than third. The purse going to the consistent Bob Hensley, which beat Mars Cassidy. The latter figured in a runaway this morning and injured jockey Tudor. Considering his run away, he showed a smart performance this afternoon. Favorites and second choices figured extensively in the decision of all the races, but it is doubtful if the layers experienced any losses, for their was a noticeable tightening of ring quotations about all the starters. Viley opened proceedings by scoring his first purse of the meeting when he outstayed Wat in the opener. Mico Oirl. favorite, had little difficulty in landing the second race. Stonehenge repeated a previous victory when he led the others home in the third race. The sixth race went to Tureo, on which Buxton this time gave a faultless ride. Mayme W.. coming with a sensational rush in the last quarter, got up in the last stride to overhaul Plaudito, a well-intended good tiling, in the closing race. A. A. Reilly, a prominent Wall street broker, that Andy Blakely is training an extensive stable for here, was an arrival with his family, and will stay for the remainder of the racing-
