ROYAL CONTEST IN KENTUCKY DERBY. Foreshadowed by Two-Year-Old Form of Eligibles to Churchill Downs Historic Race. By John T. Salbe. Louisville. Ky.. March 3. — Form shown by Kentucky Derby eligibles as two-year-oils, bespeak a royal contest in the historic race at Churchill Downs May 12. All sections of the country are represented in the rich stake and a glance over the past performances of these candidates slmws that not one eligible stands out in the brilliant list that has been named. It is the most equ.illy balanced entry list that has been named in many a long year. Those who are speculatively inclined are already seeking places where odds may be secured on their favorites. According to reports Midway. Harry Kelly. Westy Hogan. Bellringer and North Star HI., are dividing the money offered so far. However, many favor the chances of Omar Khayyam, the crack of the Billings and Johnson stable. Local lovers of the turf are looking upon Oreen Jones as the real dark horse in the Derby and if the colt runs up to the expectations of his owner he will be a hard horse to beat. Kentucky thoroughbreds on past performances stand a royal chance of earning brackets in the big race. Midway has five races to his credit and Wi sty Hogan has the same number, despite the fact that he was laid up last spring with a bad knee, which was due to an accident. Only four in the Derby have earned brackets five times, the other two being the four-time stake winner Harry Kelly and Cudgel. The two latter performers are awwed by John W. Schorr of Memphis. Of the eastern horses the Whitney eligibles seem best, though there are several other promising ones that have been named. Tumbler, one of the quartet representing the Whitney stable, has four races, two of them stake races to bis credit. Hwfa thoiich not raced as often as the others, gives promise of developing into a high-class three-year-old. James Butler, also of New York, is pinning his faith in Ivory Black, which holds forth much promise as a comer. Derby Eligibles and Their Public Form.
