KILMER TWO-YEAR-OLDS ARE NOW READY. Promising Youngsters Will Carry Virginian Turf- ! mans Colors at Bowie. Baltimore, Mil.. March 19. — No more promising two-year-olds will he seen at Bowie this spring than the youngsters that will bear the silks of Willis Sharpe Kilmer, of New York and Virginia. There are a dozen or more in the band, being prepared by Henry McOniiiol. a trainer of experience and proven skill, at Mr. Kilmers Virginia farm in Middlesex County, near the mouth of the Rappahannock. They will be fit to do their beat at the first asking, be-raase the sandy roads of Middlesex have been in first rate condition for training all winter. Not one has missed a work-out. There is American blood aplenty in the Kilmer youngsters, but most of them came from abroad, and were purchased by the New York sportsman at the Mackay and Duryea sales last year and in Great I.ritain. Mr. Kilmer will probably show at Bowie the first Fitz Herbert and the first Sweep ••• two-year-olds that will appear on a Jockey lab track in 1917. For in McO.miels string there is a smart filly by Fitz Herbert called Feu d Artifice, whose dam was Strikelight. and a prepossessing colt by Sweeper that will be known to faate as Nelswocp. his dam having been the French mare Lady Nell. The Fitz Herbert filly came out of the Mackay sale of last winter and the Sweeper eott out of the Duryea sale at Saratoga last sumni"r. Fitz Herbert, a son of Flint Wa il — Moganatlc, and the former holder of the American record for two miles, which he established in 1909 win n hi won the P.owie Cup at Pimlico. is generally regarded as one of the greatest horses the American turf has developed and he wil1 be represented on the American turf this coming season by a dozen or more two-year-olds. A Son of Sweeper Among the Band. Sweeper is not so will-known an this side of the Atlantic. But he was bred in America. His sire was Broomstick and his dam Ravette II.. was the mother of Frank iill and Sam Jackson. Sweeper made liis reputation as a race horse in Croat Pritain. his most notable victory having been scored in the Two Thousand Guineas. He is considered by British critics to have been the best PloonistieU colt that raced on the other side. Whisk Broom not excepted. His representative in tic Kilmer establishment is a colt of substance, bone and graceful proportions. with good feet and legs and a sound constitution. Fitz Herberts filly is a brown, width was the color of her celebrated daddy. Of size and range and sin-has shown McDaniel enough to make him believe she will come to hand quickly. Pesides these McDaniel expects to show at Bowie, a half slater of Wi.isk Broom, which claims Rock Sand for a sire. This miss also came out of the Mackay ale. Conference is Whisk Brooms balf-aistera name. She. also, has discovered speed, but she may not get to the post as quickly as some of her stable mates of the .iuvenile end of the establishment will. The Rock Sands do not always mature quickly. Mr. Kilmer has a colt and a filly by the Martigon stallion Magic, which he has imported for s rvice at his stud in New York, that appear to be precocious types. The colt is called Magnmah. the filly Magic Boot. Two other prepoaoeoatag youngsters that. probably, will be seen under colors at Bowie are Sun Briar, a colt by Bandridge, and White Dinah, a daughter of The White Knight McGees -iro|. McDaniel expects to have the three-year-olds Tom McTaggart and Flection ready for the Bowie Inaugural. Both have wintered satisfactorily. Tom McTaggart, which was about third beat among the eastern two-year olds of 1910. will prepare under colors at Bowie and Havre de Grace for many eastern three-year-old engagements. It is not the intention of Mr. Kilmer to send him west. Election, a winner on the New York tracks last summer, is a SOU of Ballot- Sadie S. He is not as big a celt as Tom McTaggart and. probably, he lias net as much speed. But he growing and McDaniel be lieves he will make something of a loag-dhrtaace runner. In his races of last year he manifested a disposition to run from behind and Ballot has .1 ready established a reputation as a sire of ttayera. Besides these colts Mr. Kilmer ha- a three-year-old filly of promise in Hussy. This one is a daughter of Star Bhoot — odd Oirl and a winner. She has a quick turn of speed and the heavily cushioned track at Bowie should suit her right down to the ground.
