ENGLANDS ARRAY OF CUP HORSES. Everyone will be pleased that the Newmarket Gold Cap — omitted last year — is to Ik- re-stored to the- Second Extra program in June, for this will in some measure supply the place of the Ase-ot Cup. which is recognized as the most important race ol its class in the- world and the best test of stamina and high -class racing merit. The distance — Sum mer Course of two miles and twenty-four yards is shorter by a half mile- than at Ase-ot. but wili serve the purpose equally well as a sterling te-st. The conditions of the race are- worth re-peating. bearing in mind the- gre-at importance of the occa sion. The Newmarket Gold Cup. value 200 sovereigns plus 1.000 sovere-igns in specie added to a sweepstakes of 20 sovereigns each, half forfeit, for three-year-olds and upward, the second to re-e-eive 100 sovereigns out of the- stakes, and third to save stake-. Fifteen entries are required to ensure a race, and there- should be- no difficulty in securing them. Ponimern and Son in Law have retired from active service. but the- opportunity is not likely to be missed by Mr. Hulton witli his Derby and Oaks winner Fifinella, possibly Atholiiig also. while Mr. Buchanan may safely be relied on to throw down the gauntlet witli his champion Harry On. Some Other Possible Entries. Among Hurry Oils vie-tims in the- "War Lagl i " was ClarissisBBS, to which I ird Falmouth may give another chance, and it is practically certain that Mr. Sanford will do so with Nassovian. of which so much was expected until lie went wrong last back-end. Again there- is Kwang Su. which was more or le-ss under a cloud during the autumn after he had been second for the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby, and after lie-r long rest hope may be revived in Canyon, which was unquestionably a good mare on the clay she won the One Thousand Guineas in such convincing style, though for SOBM reason or other sh - went all to pieces afterward. Mr. Raphael is too keen a sportsman. I fancy, ti miss the opportunity with Sanctum, which proved himself a great Stayer in the Cesarewitch. though lie may not be in the top class. Then the Duke of rial Is ad may be tempted to take a chance with Cannohie. which stayed on well to win tin-Jockey Club Stakes and it was her liking for long courses that promoted Captive Princes* to the top of tin- three-year-olds in Ireland last year. King Alfonso lias expressed a keen desire to race-in England, and has a rial good four-year old in Antivari. which dosed a successful season last year by winning the- Prix de lElevage at Mont da Mar naa in October, by way of signalizing the fi st appearance of the Spanish royal colors in France, and Capt. Gohn has a brace of good roltS in Teeldy and teed lank ii i,. or ix.ti, „f which will probably be- enter.il. Add to these some- of the best three year-olds, and the- stipulated number of entrh-s would easily i.e rvalbmd. Apparently it is not la tended to continue- the June- Stakes, but its rejection will be aandsosnel] compensated for by the restoration of the Gold Cup. — "Vigilant" in London Sportsman.
