SIR GEORGE CHETWYND TAKEN BY DEATH. A cablegram received at his London residence announces the death of Sir Oeorge Chetwynd. at Monte Carlo, on Saturday. March 11. Sir Oeorge, who at the time of his demise was sixty -eight years of age. had been in the habit of spending the winter months on the Riviera, consumption and heart trouble having made considerable inroads on his health. As a young man. Sir George was a conspicuous figure on the turf, and with a large stable of horses he met with a fair share of success in minor races and handicaps, his colors being rarely carried in the important weight -for-age events. The straw and sky blue, however, made an abrupt disappearance from the turf in 1SS7. as the result of tin action which he brought against Lord Durham, and which remains one of the causes celehre of the racing world. At the Cimcr.uk Club dinner. Lord Durham had made pointed remarks concerning the running of Fullerton, one of the Itest horses Sir George ever had. The speech created a tremendous sensation, and Sir George promptly re ipiested the stewards of the Jockey Club to investigate the charges. A refusal was followed by the institution of an action for libel against Lord Durham, and then the stewards consented to arbitrate between the two parties. They were assisted by three other well-known sportsmen, and the upshot was that Sir George Chetwyi.d. who claimed 20,MMI pounds damages, was awarded a farthing. Subsettucntly he resigned from the Jockey Club, of which he had been a member since 1871, and of which he had also been a steward, whilst a well-known jockey who had beeu associated with him in the case lost his license and was not reinstated for several years. Intil he came of age, the deceased baronet raced as "Mr. Mortimer." — Loudon Sporting Life.
