YOUNG AUSTRALIAN HORSES RACE ON. The Australian Jockey Club, it may be mentioned, once ran a three -eighths race for yearlings at Randwick. That was in July of 1SS1 ami it was won by Mistake Dante- Stockdove in ST%, with Alice MCngor aeeoud and Moriieth third. At Randwick the following month the latter, which was owned by the Hon. J. White, won the first two year old race of the l.vSl-S2 season and his early training did him so little harm that, as a four-year-old, he pulled off the Australian Cup, two and oue-quarter miles. Mistake, the winner of the yearling race, was still a useful sprinter at six years, and also scored over the hurdles at that age. Intil ISM Tattes.ills Club held a two year old race at Randwick in August about the opening of the season of each year, but then the rule was altered, two-year-olds being debarred from starting in this state prior to October I. One of the last horses of note to win Tattersalls early young race was Le Var. and at Randwick as a six-year-old he won at weight-for-ago, a mile and a quarter and two and a quarter miles. However, though notable instances of horses commencing early and lasting until well up in years can be quoted, it seems fair to assume that early racing must be detrimental to two-year-olds as a whole.
