HUBBUB WINS THE CONNAUGHT CUP. Easily Defeats Reno in Blue Bonnets Feature Race — Old Steeplechaser Steve Lane a War Veteran. Montreal. Que.. June 12. — apt. W. J. lress furnished the winner of todajra feature race at Blae I.onnets. when his I.rooinstick gelding Hubbub won the Coniiaught Cun. a dash of a mile and a quarter, to which the .Montreal Jockey Club added ,500. Hubbub made most of the pace and heat Keno by a collide of lengths, lteno was an added starter. She was unfortunate in being on the inside for the entire way. where the going was deep and holding, and this ruined whatever chance she might have had. The steeplechase went to H. i. Bedwells Lilly Light, which b. at Hearts of Oak in a canter. The latter furnished dosi ate at tea until in the last quarter, when he tired badly. It was his first race this pear and it will undoubtedly tighten him up. Incidentally. Early Lights victory was his sec 1 at the meeting and the fourth that the Bed-well horses have won at Blue Bonnets. Previous to the running of the sixth race, J. Heffering purchased Dr. Nelson at private sale and the colt was turned over to Al Austin, who will train him in the future. Jockey agents will not be recognized by the Coniiaught Park Jockey Club, which means that all jockeys riding at the Ottawa track during the coming meeting will either have to make their own engagements or have their contract employers or their trainers do so for them. The officials complained that some of these agents were making engagements frequently for a couple of jockeys who were riding against each other in the same nice. Paymaster again changed hands through the claiming route after he won the seventh race yesterday. This makes the third different owner he has had in as many days. II. 8. Bedwell. «;. H. Bedwell for 10. Carman Horses to Race at Ottawa. R. F. Canaan will send six of the nine horses he shipped up from Belmont Park over to Ottawa. He will also race them at Hamilton before sending them back to New York. E. W. Moore is another owner who will send a division of his stable to Ottawa. Jockey Crump will also be seen in the saddle at that meeting. Entries for the opening day of the Ottawa meeting can be made with Joseph McLennan at the Blue Bonnets course on Thursday. Steve Lane, the famous old steeplechaser, which left Canada a couple of years ago as a charger for Colonel Farquhar, commHndlng officer of the Princess Patricias, is back in Quebec, turned out to pass his remaining days at Mr. Colin Campbells place. Manor House, Saint-Hilaire, Quebec. Steve Lane saw eighteen months active service. and had some miraculous escapes. Of the 1.200 I which made up the Princess Pat regiment, there are but seventy-five survivors, and Steve Lane is the only charger to come through safely. After Colonel Faniuhar was killed astride of him. Steve Lane was presented to Major Hamilton Gnult, the gentleman who donated $.*it0.000 from his own parse to finance the Princess Pats. In one of the famous battles some few months ago, while riding the old steeplechaser. Major Gault was wounded in both legs and incapacitated for further service. When he was ordered back home he decided to bring old Steve Lane back with him and, of the thousands of horses that have been sent overseas since the outbreak of the war, he is the only horse to return. Steve Lane won many steeplechases in Canada, among them the William Hendrie Memorial Steeplechase, which calls for a journey ovef the three-mile course.
