AQUEDUCTS FEATURE TO J. J. LILLIS. Favored by. Sloppy. Going Marrone Racer Wins Rockaway Soiling Stakes in Driving Finish. New York, July 3. Favored by the sloppy going, and showing sudden improvement, the Marrone Stables J. J. Lillis got up in time to score a driving victory in the Rockaway Selling Stakes, the feature of a rainy and rather uninteresting program at the Aqueduct course today. The winner was badly outpaced in the early running, but moved up gradually when turning for home and finished with a mighty rush In the final sixteenth to win going away. Quartz, displaying his usual great burst of early speed, raced into a long- lead in the early running and, while he maintained his speed farther than usual, could not withstand the winners rush. The disappointment of the race was the showing of the favorite, Paddy Whack, which was a well-beaten third. It was a bad day for favorite backers, as the first four fell by the wayside. The greatest surprise of the afternoon was the defeat of Willis S. Kilmers good three-year-old Tom McTaggart by Samuel Ross Crank in the three-year-old handicap. The Kilmer colt ruled an odds-on favorite on the strength of some excellent work-outs, but his 1917 debut proved an inauspicious one. This was due chiefly to the presence of Marie Miller, which forced him along at such a pace that he had nothing left to withstand the challenge of Crank. W. II. Travers claimed Courtship out of the first race for ,450 and later resold him to the Kentucky stable at private terms. Emil Herz bid up Starfinch. winner of the opening dash, from 1,000 to ,300 and obtained him at that figure. It is believed this was in retaliation for the activity of W. Travers in selling race circles recently. A. A. Keilly, who holds the contract on the services of apprentice jockey Troise, had the boy go under an X-Ray examination by Dr. S. R. Brush and it was discovered that there were no bones broken, as it was feared at first. He is suffering from badly-strained muscles, but it is expected he will be able to return to the saddle shortly. J. Loftus will depart for Fort Erie this evening, where he will have the leg up on Liberty Loan in the Fourth of July Stakes. He will also ride Harry Shaw in his nice tomorrow. A. Schuttinger was an absentee from the saddle today, owing to the death of his father. Steeplechase jockey J. Smith was an arrival from Canada today, where cross-country racing has been suspended. A. A. Reillys good two-year-old Green Gold has gone slightly amiss and will not be seen under colors for some time. The . stables three-year-olds Diamond Rock has been shipped to the farm at Amsterdam, where he will be turned out for the summer. II. C. Hallenbecks The Finn, which has always shown to best advantage under the riding of jockey A. Schuttinger, will have that boy in the saddle in the Brookdale Handicap on Saturday.
