R, T. WILSON LEASES JACK HARE JR. Speedy Colt Will Carry Colors of EresMeat of Saratoga Association in Grab Bag Handicap. By Ed Cole. Saratoga, N. Y., August 8. R. T. Wilson, president of the Saratoga Association, has leased Jack Hare Jr. to run in his interest in the Grab Bag Handicap, to be run on August 22. All the best two-year-olds in training will be sent to the post in this race, seventy-five subscriptions having been taken by the most prominent stables. The amount paid for the lease for this one race is of private concern and was taken by Mr. Wilson so that he could have a worthy representative. Jack Hare Jr. is in several stakes at Saratoga, but the crucial test of his ability will be made in the Grab Bag, for which every good horse is being especially prepared. Owing to the change in the eastern schedule for the autumn, which now runs to October 6j it is probable that the Havre de Grace meeting wjll be extended. A proposition will be put up to the Jockey Club at its meeting tomorrow, asking that Havre de Grace begin its meeting on September 11, instead of September 15. Should the request be granted, it will give that meeting seventeen days instead of thirteen. Notwithstanding there is no racing in Canada, few Canadians have been so far in the village. Some have an idea that Old Rosebud was not all out in his race with Capra and Roamer . The most reliable experts believe to" the contrary, though they give all praise due to the phenomenal horse he "is. Andrew Bowman says Old Rosebuds renovation is extraordinary. "Horses can be patched tip after a breakdown to win races," said Mr., Bowman, "but to rejuvenate a horse and make him come hack- to his best form and beat the best in training, is something never before achieved in my recollection. He is a wonderful horse and has been exceedingly well handled." Long-Shot Winners Costly to" Layers. "Ono would think that all these long-shots winning that the odds layers were coining money around here," said Mortimer Lynch. "You would hardly believe it, but there is seldom a long-shot wins but somebody digs it out of the bunch. If I had all the money that was won on Master McGrath, I would sneak into a cot at Lakewood and sleep for the rest of my life." Mnny complaints are coming from the layers that some folks forget their obligations. Welching is anticipated and provided for, but not to the extent it has reached ths year and it is not likely to im.-prove with age. Clarenee Mackay arrived here yesterday and will stay until after the sale of his French-bred "yearlings. Fred Burlew will go back to France if - Mr.- Mackay calls upon him to do so. Otherwise he will remain here for a while. Owners of the more fashionable stables around here are constantly on the lookout for good, horses. Commissions are out to buy handicap horses and yearlings that give promise. It looks as if the kind words said about Smoky Lamp were not exaggerations. She only ran an eighth of a mile at full speed in her race and acted sensibly in every respect. She may be a liigh-class filly.
