: : ; A f BEAUMONT STUD YEARLINGS BRING WONDERFUL PRICES AT SARATOGA FIFTY-FOUR FOR 54,350 a By J. L. DEMPSEY. Saratoga, N. Y., August 11. -The consignment of fifty-four yearlings from the Beaumont j Stud, that were offered for sale at the Fasig-Tipton auction mart last night, resulted in the banner sale in years, the youngsters bringing the grand total of 54,350. Bidding was spirited from the moment the first colt was led into the ring, the bidders knew what they were after and were prompt with their response when auctioneer Bain called for offers. The rivalry for possession of some of the stars was keen and ripples of applause followed the consummation of a sale after several of the tilts. Especially good prices were obtained for the Uncle aggregation, the youngsters sired 1 by this famous stud averaging well over ,000 each. The star of the sale, a bay colt by i Uncle Ferrol, went to Samuel Ross for 0,000. A. J. Joyner secured the Uncle Nether- sole colt for ,400. The chestnut colt by Uncle Ruby Nethersole went to John Sanford J cn his bid of ,600, Samuel Ross also got the Uncle Claudia colt for ,500. C. J. Casey had the Uncle Katrina colt knocked down to him for ,700, and the Uncle Busy Lass colt was secured for ,500 by J. L. Dempsey, the latter buying the youngster for the account v of a well-known publisher. s The colts and fillies sired -by Star Shoot also brought wonderful prices. The star of l the Star Shoots was the Dorothy Hampton colt, which was secured by W. M. Jeffords for ,600. Samuel Ross got the Courtplaster colt for ,000. f It is not likely that a more representative gathering ever attended a yearling sale in this country and the result clearly reflects the condition of the turf at present. The eager- i ness shown to obtain good racing material by men of wealth augurs considerably for the future of the turf in this country. How Miller ami Heailley Paid ,000 for 8,500. Hal Price Headley, the young master of Beaumont, was highly elated with the success attending his sale and received the numerous congratulations with boyish delight. Equally pleasing was the sale to President John Trantor "of the Fasig-Tipton Co. "Our immense sales mart is here solely through Mr. Headley," said Mr. Trantor. "We built the i plant mostly on the promise from him that he would sell his youngsters through us and he i is practically responsible for our being in business at present." . An illustration of Mr. Headleys good fortune is shown in the fact that the four youngsters to bring top prices were-4Jurchasedby,tMessrs. Miller and Headley-from Dixie Knight for an . average of 00 each. They were raised at Beaumont under Mr. Headleys own supervision 1 and they brought prices that exceeded even the expectations of their owners. This is the third public sale that Mr. Headley has conducted of youngsters bred by him at his palatial Beaumont Farm. Relating his experiences in reference to his selling his colts he said: "My first sale was at Sheepshead Bay, the day after racing ceased at that track in blue 1909. There was hardly a handfull of people present and those that was there were decidedly in the dumps, for no j cne knew what would result from the adverse legislation that had just been enacted and had put a supposed quietus on the sport. The eighteen youngsters I offered brought an average 1 of 62.50, hardly enough to cover their shipping expenses from the farm. My next sale, which was held at Lexington several years ago, was under more propitious circumstances 1 and the thirteen yearlings I sold there brought an average of over ,200." j Last nights average for the fifty-four head exceeds the good standard set by T. C. i McDowell at his recent sale and will likely remain the record for this season. A number of the bidders .tonight and, who had youngsters knocked down to them, were buying for the accounts of well-known eastern and western turfmen. rrouertjr of Hal Price Headley, Headley Miller and W.
