CHANGE IN WESTERN RACING. MEETING AT MAXWELTON PARK TO BE DEPARTURE FROM OLD METHODS. Custom of Racing People Has Been to Ask Tolerance or Protection Different Course to Be Pursued at St, Louis. St. Louis, Mo., August 24. The race-meeting, which opens at Maxwelton Park Wednesday, may mark a new era in western racing. It has been the custom of racing people to either ask for tolerance from officials or be sure that the betting and was amply protected by law before they would risk opening the gates. For a racing association to boldly announce that it was going to race within the laws of the state and take no recognition of betting, is a new deal all around that will bo watched with the keenest interest. Xot only racing people, but the entire populace including the newspapers, are giving the project publicity and support and it can be truthfully asserted that the city will delight in the return of the sport if racing can be successfully conducted under the present, laws. The meeting will not lack for horses. Present indications are that there will -be more than 300 horses on hand for the opening, which will insure good sport. The track is in a desirable condition for making fast time, and each day fast moves are, recorded by the railbirds. Unless something happens to him in his. training, St. Louisans will see Hodge, one of the best handicap horses in the country, racing at Maxwelton Park. Hodge .is being pointed for the Mound City Handicap, the opening day feature. Hodge will .have plenty of competition. George Senn is bringing his good handicap horse Daddy Holbrook, purchased, last week at a fancy price. Charlie Rowe will send Fan G. .and Berlin will bear, the colors of J. S. Ward. It is not yet known what is coming in thp Bradley car, but if Blind Baggage is in the shipment, a meeting between him ond Hodge will lie worth seeing, -Stake Dates for Meeting Announced.-- . -. - The Stormont string is among the latest-arrivals, hi the band are The Masquerader, Reno. Kirov, Scaramouch, Itepton, Wow, Bert Wlhuris, Irregular and Iteybourn. Stormont says thur all .are ready to race. r , , , t , Manager Joseph A. Murphy has set the stake dates as fojlows: . , , August 20 Mound City Handicap, ,000 added; for all ages; three-quarters. ... September 1. Mississippi Valley Stake, ,000 added;- handicap, two-year-olds; three-quarters. September 3 Labor Day Handicap, ,000 added; three-year-olds -and over; one mile and a sixteenth. September 8 The St. Louis Stake, 1,000 added; for all ages; one mile and fifty yards. There will be six races each day, with no purse of a value less than 00. The list of officials is: Presiding judge Joseph A. Murphy. Associate judge J. B. Campbell. Racing secretary Joseph McLennan. Starter A. B. Dade. Paddock judge John Carey. Convention manager John T. Stinson. Such mimes should guarantee a. well-conducted meeting. . Maxwelton is within trolley ride of the city and is on two of- the best, automobile roads in the county.
