BELMONT PARK OPENS TODAY PROSPECT IS TOR SOME EXCELLENT RACING OVER A DRYING OUT TRACK. Gcorgo Smith, Hank ODay, Chiclet and Capra to Measure Strides in the Belmont Park Autumn Handicap Gossip of the Course. New York. August :il. Tim second annual fall mooting since iIk passing of adverse racing laws in Now York will be ushered in tomorrow afternoon, when the Westchester Racing Association throws open the Kates of beautiful Itclmont lark, for the beginning of a twelve days mooting. An excellent program has lieen provided ly Secretary Earloekor for the first days sport. which will he decided over a drying out track. The inception of racing at the Queens course, marks the beginning of the end of the best local racing season that has been enjoyed in years, and immediately preceedinj; the opening of Aqueduct, where the sport will be conducted for three weeks, under the auspices of the Metropolitan Racing Association, the Queens County Jockey Club and the Empire City Racing Association. The Aqueduct meeting will be the first fall meeting held here since tins Agnew-IIart bill went into effect and will lie conducted continuously after the closing of liclmout lark, winding up the years sport on October 5. The itclmont Park Autumn Handicap for three-year-olds and over, and the Broadhollow Steeplechase Handicap, are the features of the card. The former is to be run at a mile and an eighth and has attracted a small .but high-class field and should prove interesting from many standpoints. Interested in George Smiths Appearance. The starting of John Sanfords George Smith will mark the colts first appearance since las defeat in the Saratoga Handicap on the opening day at the Springs, but reports indicate that this sterling performer has been going along well, in his works and is at top form. -His effort in tomorrows feature will be keenly observed. For opponents the Sanford foUr-year-old will have J. E. AVideuers Chiclet, which has been racing so promisingly all the year; A. K. Macombers Hank ODay, which should erente speculations as to his ability to stay a considerable .distance of ground ; James Butlers Cailrii. which will be dangerous if she races to her best form, and Kmil Herz Daddys Choice, which is always a formidable contender in any company ovfr a long route. This quintet of racers is of the cream of the older brigade and a well-contested race is to be looked forward to. W. M. Jeffords, the Philadelphia turfman, lias consummated a deal whereby he has secured the useful plater, Fenmousc, from G. A. Mailer. Kmil Herz has purchased a yearling filly by Mc-Got; Irsnla Emma from AV. A. Carter at private terms. The horses of the Glen Riddle Stable, Ral Parr, J. AV. McClelland and Bert "Williams, will rest at Saratoga for a few weeks and will not participate in local racing, but will go to Havre de Grace for the opening of the fall meeting there. Kdward Trotter lias mnde arrangements to send his stable to Douglas lark, Louisville. . C. Rasch has taken control of the three-year-old Gloomy Gus and the two-year-old Confiscation, which wore formerly trained by G. C. "Winfrey and the Elmwood lark youngster. Midnight Sun. He will in the future prepare the trio for their racing.
