MANY NEWCOMERS PRESENT Northern Visitors Enliven the Sport at New Jefferson Track. Dick Williams Captures the Most Important Race in a Hot Drive with Polroma. Now Orleans, La., December 3. The many newcomers from the east augmented the racing attendance at .Jefferson Park this afternoon in extensive fashion. There also seemed more routine attaching to all phases of the sport, particularly in the pavilion, where betting action was transacted with dispatch and strictly within the interpretation of the law, as recently handed down by the Supreme Court. The hard drubbing that the oral layers received Saturday was responsible for a thinning of their ranks, several being absent from the line. The track continues to show steady improvement and with a hard rain to pack the going it. will be much faster. There was a big local contingent at the course to view the sport and they found the racing interesting. Most of the finishes were hard fought, the winner in most instances being forced to sustain hard drives. The feature race was a mile dash for a purse of 1917.sh00, and Dick Williams, a prononnced choice, just managed to outstay Iolromn after a furious last eighth drive. Marianne entered the ranks of double winners at the meeting when she scored in a close decision in the final race. The opener brought an unset by the victory of All Bright, which beat the favorite, H. C. Basch. Counterblast cost the layers considerable, for he was backed with confidence and won in easy style. Meclicka. under Robinsons good riding, beat an ordinary band in the third ami Kiebiirne gave tin; Kentucklaiis an equal division of the six purses, wlien he came home in advance of the starters in the fifth race. RELIEVE PATRONS OF WAR TAX. The association this morning decided to relieve patrons of paying the war tax on the admission charge. The usual S2 admission for men will continue and ?1 for ladies, but in this will be included war tax. There has also been a forty per cent reduction in the railroad tariff to the track, on the spe.eial trains which ply between the city and the track. The first Ladies Day of the season has been announced for tomorrow and every Tuesday will hereafter be Ladies Day at the Jefferson track. Ladies accompanied by an escort will be admitted free, but will have to pay a ten cent war tax. Announcement was made this morning that no entries will be accepted from any owner or trainer in the future, jmless the jockey has been engaged and is reported when the entry is made. Jockeys Louder, Koppleman and Mooney were , among the newcomers; Louder accepted mounts at once. Moouey will ride for W. C. Weant. Stewards K. C. Smith and Carter C. Hall took up their duties during the afternoon, as did starter A. B. Dade and Racing Secretary Joseph McLennan. Word was received during the afternoon that R. O. Egan is on the way here from San Diego, and will bring his crack High Cost, a frequent winner last summer, to be raced at both tracks.
