GEORGE LONGS HORSES DOING WELL Will Have About Thirty-Five Head by Early Spring Freecutter Derby Eligible. Louisville. Ky., December 3.: George J. Long, one of the most prominent breeders "of thoroughbreds in this country ami owner of Bashford Manor Farm, wlibb K located in Jefferson County, a short distance from Louisville, was a visitor at the Churchill Ivmi track Sunday morning, where lie hiiu an "extensive stable of horses, in vinter quarters. Mr. .Long witnessed the exercise- of Ills horses which ara hi charge of trainer Pete Coyne and assistant trainer Tom AHearn. The Long stable quartered at the local track consists of eighteen head, of which thirteen of that number are yearlings. Several of the youngsters are Knglish-bred horses. The yearlings are all going along well in their work and were galloped a mile and an eighth this morning over a muddy course, due to heavy rains during the past week. While nc:ie of the youngsters have been urged in their work thus far. they have all been credited with making the quarter in 24 and 24. That the Long colors will be conspicuous in Kentucky during 191 S is assured by the fact that the present string in winter quarters here now will be increased to about thirty-five head by the early spring, as other representatives will be brought in from Bashford Manor. The most prominent thoroughbred in the Long barn at the present time and the one which attracts more attention, is the 1918 Kentucky Derby eligible Freecutter, by Free Lance Cutter. While Freecutter is receiving no strenuous work these days, he is put through his usual morning gallops and walks ami appears to be in perfect condition. Two other horses of prominence in the Long barn are Ocean Sweep and Amelita, 1018 Kentucky Oaks eligibles. FIFTY-TWO IN J. W. CORRIGANS BARN. The largest stable quartered at Churchill Downs is that of .T. W. Corrigan. whose establishment embraces fifty-two bead. A number of this band includes yearlings, which were transferred here from Kingston Farm, while the others are horses shipped here at the close of Plmlico. A. K. Ma-comber, who is expected here this week to inspect his horses, has twenty-seven head stabled at the Downs. .A great many foreign-bred yearlings are included in the Macomber stable. Fourteen yearlings belonging to Willis S. Kilmer are also stabled at the Downs in charge of Al Steele, assistant trainer to Henry McDaniel. Quite an addition is expected to this stable in a shipment of horses from New York. Miller Henderson, the Louisville owner, who has sixteen head stabled at the Downs, is working out his yearlings daily and states that they are in fairly good form. This stable is headed by Beaver-kill, which, beat Cudgel at Douglas Park. W. W. Hastings, by Hnrrigau--Royal Lady, which won two races during the Latonia fall meeting anil Robert L. Owen, the proierty of A. L. Rogers, the "Oklahoma Potato King," are. going along steadily in their winter work. Dave Nicoll, at one time one of the foremost race riders in America, can be seen each day galloping horses at the local tracks.
