TOUCH OF WINTER COMES Patrons of Jefferson Park Encounter Shivery Weather. Only One Decided Favorite Manages to Score Lucky R. and Leah Cochran Win. Now Orleans, La., December 20. A sudden change to freezing weather from the summery brand that prevailed recently, caused a slump in the attendance, but at that a large crowd was on hand to view the racing and attending incidents. The track was again in a bad way and it served to cause a reduction in the already light entries for the day. The small fields, however, brought about heavy speculation. Several of the races were interesting and developed close finishes. There was no particularly outstanding race programed, all the dashes excepting the second, being at a mile or over. Favorites were overthrown in regular order after the victory of King of the Wind in the opening dash, but some of the- winners found extensive backing and it"" is doubtful if the layers profited to any great extent on the day. The ring lost considerably by the victory of Lucky It. in the fourth race. The mare was pounded down steadily and made good in commanding fashion. Prior to the race, her connections pleaded with the stewards to excuse her from starting, but this they refused, holding that she wns a tried mud runner and had won in going Mich as that of today. The connections of Leah Cochran also made an effort to have her excused from starting because she did not run well in the going, but the stewards likewise refused to let her out and she won after u spirited duel with Prince Hermis. Waterproof furnished additional excitement in the closing race when his bandages became loosened during the stretch drive, but luckily no other horse was eIosej;nough proximity to him to cause any damage. The race for jockey honors between Robinson and I Johnson continues to bo of the keenest sort. Both I riders scored u win each during the afternoon, cnubling Robinson to lead the westerner by one mount. Jockey "Willis was suspended for three days by the stewards for disobedience at the post. Jockey M. Garner was indisposed and cancelled his riding engagements for the afternoon. James OHara, principal owner of the Rowie track, who has been here for some time, was advised that a fifty-stall stable back of the grandstand at Bowie, had burned during the night. . WINFREY AND GOODMAN EXONERATED. The stewards Tuesday afternoon handed down the following ruling: "For offensive touting in contravention of recently posted rules of the Jefferson Fair and Business Mens Racing Associations, G. . Winfrey and J. B. Goodman have been suspended; their trainers license suspended and they have been notified to appear before the stewards to show cause why they should not be denied all privileges, including admission to the grounds of botli associations." After a searching inquiry into the matter of G. . Winfrey and J. B. Goodman, both were exonerated by the stewards. The names of both persons had been used all over the country in letters to people, soliciting bets on the horses in their charge. The signatures of both men had been accurately reproduced. The stewards have the name of the guilty party with convincing evidence of his actions and have asked the aid of the Federal authorities in stamping out such practices. Jockey Donahue also cancelled his engagements during the afternoon on account of illness. The Kentuckians did not fare overly well during the afternoon, Waterproof being the only winner that came from the blue grass section. William Oliver was an arrival from New York today. Other easterners who got in were Edward and Mrs. Arlington and J. I. Misick. Two-year-olds that raced before the first of April last year and have been in retirement since, will be seen at the Fair Grounds. Some of them have worked well and should be big factors in the racing. A race will be put on in each book for three-year-olds that have not won since April 1. It. K. Watkins. the well-known trainer, who arrived here in bad health, has sufficiently recovered to le around and was at, the track on Christmas lay for a while. W. II. Baker has secured second call on jockey M. Garner during the Fair Grounds meeting. Budweiser, Baby Lynch and Russell Square have been restored to good standing and will be handled by T. F. Bornmau. The old Fair Grounds are being put in grand condition and will be ready to take care of a big throng New Years day.
