RECENT NEWMARKET DECEMBER SALES Good Average Received for the Largest tfotal Sold In Recent Years. The world famous "December Sales," held each year at Newmarket, England, for many years past by Messrs. Tattersall, duly came off this year on December 3, 4, 5, 0 and 7, with results fairly satisfactory to sellers and buyers. In all 051 .horses were disposed of, embracing foals, yearlings, two-year. olds, older horses in training or. .fit io train, broodmares and stallions. American buyers were absent, but sales were made to French, and Spanish owners. The British Bloodstock Agency and W. Allison bought here and there and it may be that some of their purchases were on commission for American owners, but the great bulk of the offerings were absorbed by British buyers and will stay at home to fortify and sustain British bloodstock resources, which is praiseworthy. The number1 sold was greater than at any December sale of the previous half dozen years and this considered, the grand average of .40 was surprisingly good. The totals of the sales each day were: Dates. Number sold. Aggregate. Monday, December 3 133 $ 40,102 Tuesday, December 4 121 111,040 Wednesday, Decembers 155 255,308 Thursday, December G 133 124,040 Friday, December 7 110 73,708 All sales were in guineas, a guinea being .04 in American money. The first days selling was notable for small prices, instead of large ones. A colt foal by Cylba Hill Maiden, a filly foal by Cylgad Achilles and a colt foal by Ulster King Abbey Craig sold for 0 each; a colt foal by the splendid horse Adam Bedc Rosetint, brought 5. Rosetint herself, a-six-year-old mare by Sir Visto Rosegreen and mated with Lorenzo, only brought 0. In fact the sale was replete with such curiously inadequate prices for well-bred stock, not only on that day, but on the others as well. Obviously some bargains must have been picked up for practically nothing. The high prices of the-first day were realized by two young broodmares. Velour, 5, by Marcovil Velvet, mated with Willonyx and Poets Corner, 5, by Chaucer Ormeda and mated with Bachelors Double, each selling for ,052. Matters warmed up on the succeeding days and many sales for solid prices were recorded, but nothing of the sensational order. Broodmares deemed in foal to fashionable sires brought the highest prices, stallions being in slight demand. The ten-year-old mare Perfect Peach, by Persimmon Fascination and mated with Sunstar, brought the top price of the week, 0,040, while among the stallions such a celebrity as Trout-"beck sold for a beggarly ,302. Of this St. Leger winner, it was said that a few years back 5,000 would have been refused for him. Some of the leading sales of the week were: Perfect Peach, b. m, 10, by Persimmon Fascination; W. E.
