CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF W. A. Pritchard of Montreal and J. Croker of New York, have arrived in New Orleans. They will join the colony of layers at the Fair Grounds. Ed Peters, who formerly trained for Paul J. Rainey, left New Orleans for New York, where he probably will take over one of the big eastern stables. Johnny Frach, a Chicago boy, began riding at Jefferson Park Monday. Frach was one of the leading riders in the west a few years back, lie can do 107 pounds. David Gideon plans to leave New York for New Orleans on Saturday, January 5. and, after enjoying a week or so of racing at the old Fair Grounds, will proceed to Havana, where he will remain until spring. Entries for the New Years Handicap, the opening day 6take feature at the Fair Grounds, will close today. The entrance fee is 0 and it will cost 5 additional to start. Weights will be announced Saturday. Jockey Joe Notter had his first mount at Jefferson Park Christmas day, when he was substituted for Keogh on Bird Man. Notter also had the mount on Cliff Field, with which he finished third, but was left at the post with Bird Man. In memory of Johnny Powers, who died in New York last fall, a handicap will be run at the Fair Grounds meeting, New Orleans, January 11!. It will be called the Johnny Powers Memorial Handicap and will be for a purse of 00 over the three-quarters route. Frank Herold, who has charge of jockey G. Walls, in New Orleans, has been notified by James Fitz-simmons that Walls contract was not sold to J. S:mford. Sanford, according to Herolds informa-tjqji, jias, merely purchased first call on the. boys services during the 1018 racing season.
