, DISASTROUS FIRE AT BOWIE a. Seventeen Horses Are Burned to Death in Early Morning Blaze. a Fragonard Most Prominent of the Racers Destroyed — Jockey Rodriguez Is in the Limelight. Bowie. Md.. April 12.— A fire occurred at the Bowie race track last night which wrought havoc and devastation among the stables at the course. The loss can hardly be computed in figures, for tln-tiirf lost some good racers," which were trapped iu the burning stalls and perished before they could tilled out. The conflagration, which occurred at 12:1." a. in., this morning, is the third one in the past two years at this track and. like the others, is believed to lie of incendiary origin. The blase. :!riveu by a high wind, swept disaster before it and though a bucket brigade was organized, it was soon beyond control and the stables were a total loss. Tin-first fire at the course occurred during the running of the fall meeting a year ago and twelve thoroughbreds were destroyed. The second, which hap|ieneil this winter, was squelched liefore damage was done. Perhaps the most valuable thoroughbreds among the seventeen horses which were lost last night, was Walter Houses Fragonard. for which House re cently refused 2,000. J. C. Winfrey was tie-heaviest loser. Three of his best racers. Woodward. Kagle and Jem lost their lives iu their stalls. G. Kniest Halls Eye Glass, a youngster related to A. L. Astes good three-year-old Eye Lid, J. Johnstons Jocular and M. Faulks Kuisseau wire other well-known racers trapped. CALUMET STABLE WIPED ODT. The entire Calumet Stable, the property of E. SI. tiarrisou. was wiped imt in the blaae. Moose-, head. George W. Avery. Caljer and Fellowshln were the most highly thought of runners in this establishment. Four untried two-year-olds were also destroyed. These were Joe Larsen. Belvaal. Yavapai and Queson. The outstanding feature of yesterdays racing at Bowie, which was held during a storm of rain, hail and snow, was the sensational riding of Rodriguez. This Spanish knight of the pigskin rode four winners, one second and one third out of seven mounts. His best effort was 011 Dr. Grossmans Dolina. which won the Liberty Bond race. MM giies riding here has been phenomenal and he already has a big following. T. W. OBriens good three-year-old Dianthea died at Havre de Ornce yesterday of pneumonia. Early Wright arrived today from Pleasanton. Cal.. with ten thoroughbreds, the property of George Wingfield. The Kentucky Stable arrived at Havre de Grace this morning from Lexington. Ky. Six jumpers, the property of M. L. Schwartz of New York, arrived at Pimlico today to participate in the coming meeting there. Jere Carroll was another arrival, bringing a dozen of the W. It. foe racers- from Xew York and they all shipped in good shape to Ilmlico. *
