One of the speediest mares in American racing in the past twenty vears was Hamburg Belle, win- - ner of the Futurity of 1903 and which carried the c colors of Sydney Paget and was trained by A. J. Joyner during her four years on the turf. Hamburg Belle was bred by the late Marcus Daly * at his Bitter Root Ranch in Montana, but she was foaled the property of James B. Haggin at his Elm- endorf Stud in Kentucky. Isiac. the dam of Ham- - burg Belle, was bred by Mr. Daly at his Aperfleld rt Stud in England. Isiac was foaled in 1S91 and was brought to this country the following year, though J her dam. Isis. was not brought over until three e years later. Isiac was never raced. Her first pro- duce was the good race horse. Ishtar. which was dropped in 1899 to the cover of Sam Lucas. The „ next year came Iskander. br Inverness, and that t spring 1900 Isiac was bred to Hamburg, which J had been purchased by Mr. Daly a few months pre- viously from John E. Madden for a sum approxi- mating 0,000. Mr. Daly died in the fall of 1900 and, under the e direction of the Pasig-Tinton Company, his breeding , _ establishments in this country and in England were dispersed the following year. The stallions J , and broodmares from the Montana ranch were sold in Madison Square Garden. New York, on the last t two days and evenings in January. 1901. Isiac. heavy in foal to Hamburg, was among the flrst j dozen mares offered on the second day of the sale and she was knocked down to James B. Haggin for r , .OOO. She was sent down to Elniendorf Stud and there a couple of months later Hamburg Belle was foaled. She was sent to the sales as a yearling ; and in the Shecpshead Bav pa blocks on June 24, 1901. Sydney Paget got her on a bid of ,500. Even then, it was generally understood, there was some agreement by which Mr. Haggin was to have her for stud pun loses at the end of her racing days, | and it is |nite probable that he retained an interest 1 iu her running qualities, for it was commonly understood that Mr. Haggin had certain agreements as to nearly all of the horses from his establish -J incuts raced by Mr. 1aget. TURNED OVER TO A. J. JOYNER. After her sale as a yearling Hamburg Belle was , turned over to A. J. Joyner. She was broken and tried out under his direction and in the spring of | 1903 he began the work of her development, which , was thorough. She came to hand early and made . her first start in the Rose Stakes at Aqueduct over f a heavy track April 1«, finishing unplaced. Her t next apiiearance was in an allowance race over a I fast track at Aqueduct April 21, when she was beaten a head by The Lady Rohesia. four and one- half furiongs. iu .".4%. She carried 121 pounds and was giving the former s?ven pounds and the latter tw»uty-one pounds actual weight. The mile and a sixteenth was done in 1:48% and Hamburg Belle was four lengths back of the winner. October 27, at the same track, she was beaten a head in a terrible drive for the Ravenswood Handicap, by Scotch Plume, to which she was conceding thirty-seven pounds, carrying 127 to Scotch Plumes ninety pounds. The three-quarters was run in 1:13%. October 31. at Jamaica, she made her last start of the year in the Richmond Handicap, at three-quarters and finished third. Dick Bernard, carrying ninety-nine iiounds. won by two lengths from Ascension. 112, a head in front of Hamburg Belle, 124 pounds, the time being 1:12%. WINS FLIGHT STAKES TWICE. In 1905. as a four-year-old. she won five of her nine races and was second in three of the remaining four. The only time she was unplaced was when she was beaten by Proper, Colonial Girl and Marmee in the Long Island Handicap at Shecpshead Bay. July 3. The race was run over a slow track and she was conceding weight to all of her opponents. Her victories vver- in the Coney Island Handicap, three -quarters on the main course at Shecpshead Bay June 18. with 124 pounds up, easily beating Roseben, 120. in 1:12%; the Equality Stakes, at Shecpshead Bay. June 28. in which she carried 121 pounds and ran the mile in 1:10 with the throe-year-old Dandelion, carrying loi iiounds, two lengths back; an overnight handicap at Shecpshead Bay, August 28. running the mile in 1:40%. with 124 pounds up; an all age race at the same track, September 1. in which she easily defeated Molly Brant a mile in 1:38% each carrying 119 pounds, but the Suuford mare having ■ year the advantage, and then came i her second triumph in the Flight Stakes, in which she duplicated her time of the previous year, but with 122 pounds up. seven pounds more. Her sec-•mds were to Marjoram, in a race for mares, at Brooklyn. May 29. her first start for the year; to Shot Gun. all age handicap, at Brooklyn, June 0, 1 and to Wild Mint, in the Test Handicap, at Brighton Beach. Iu each of these she was conceding weight to the winner and the finishes were hard drives. Hamburg Belle was sent to the post four times the following year. Her first start was in the Kquility Stakes" at Sheopshoud Bay, July 2, when die ran away from Halifax as if her opponents had been tied, running the mile in 1:39%, with 108 pounds up. Then she took the Brighton Mile at Itrighton Beach, July 11, covering the distance in 1 :39. with 121 pounds in the saddle. Three days later she started in the Bighton Handicap and was uii--laced. This was the Ix-giiining of the end for her. She appeared to quit badly in that race, but it was noticed the next day that she was limping somewhat, favoring a leg that had long been under i suspicion. She walked out of this in time, however, and trainer Joyner was sure that she had righted herself again. So he got her ready for the Fall Handicap, which was decided at Shecpshead Bay and in which she finished far in the ruck, and lameness . returning to the extent that Mr. Haggin decided that further attempts to race her would lie futile.
