FIFTY-NINTH RUNNING OF THE KINGS PLATE AT WOODBINE PARK THIS AFTERNOON By Francis Nelson. Toronto, Ont., May 23.— The field to face Starter Snyder tomorrow for the fifty-ninth running of the Kings Plate will include, probably, all but one of the following: Ladder of Light and Red Admiral, owned by G. W. Beard-more: Blackburn, Sadducee and May Bloom, owned by Brookdale Stable; Bencher, owned by H. Giddings; Springside. owned by Geo. H. Hendrie; Scarboro Beach, owned by H. Le Roy; McCorburn, owned by Chas. Millar; Gold Galore, Twelve Bells and Sea Froth, owned by Jos. E. Seagram; Pleasure Bent, by Thoracal fe Stable. Any absentees will probably be missing only because of lack of capable riders. The cessation of racing in Canada and the war time restrictions on the travel of young men, are responsible for the scarcity of jockeys for this important race and the list will not be complete until after the arrival of tomorrow mornings trains. Owners dependent on local talent are congratulating themselves on their early ap- propriation of such material as was available. The weather promises to be perfect for the decision of this historic event under conditions never before attending it. While the usual forms of speculation are prohibited under the war regulations, price merchants were today quoting Springside as the choice at little better than even money, with the Seagram stable second favorites. Steward Frank Bryan hus arrived from New York and Starter Snyder from Kentucky. Secretary W. P. Fraser will act in the capacity of clerk of the scales, which was his original connection with the Ontario Jockey Club. William Walker returned today from his Maryland campaign. His stable has been reduced to Harwood, Inquieta and two two-year-olds. He says he is through with racing until the sport is resumed in Canada. Jockey Rodriguez will ride Ladder of Light, if he arrives en the scene in time and Ensor will be on on? of the Brookdale Stable starters. All three of the Dyment horses will go to the post if riders are available. 1 ■ • i - ■ . ■ • I : • . ■ . . The Kings Plate was first run in 1860 under the name of the Queens Plate and continued a:, such to 1901. For four years, 1860-1863, the race was decided at Carleton and subsequently at various places in the Dominion until 1883, when Queen Victoria gave her sanction to an understanding with the founders of the Ontario Jockey Club that the race should thenceforth be established permanently at the Woodbine course. Time has proved that this was a wise decision, as, under the control of the Ontario Jockey Club, the race has amply fulfilled its purpose of encouraging the breeding of thoroughbreds in the Province of Ontario. The Kings Flute is the okiest race run continuously on the North American continent, and the decision of the Ontario Jockey Club to prevent a break in its continuity by running it this year, though racing is suspended in Canada until the close of the war, met with the approval of horse lovers the world over. Today will mark the fifty-ninth renewal of this famous race, the interesting history of which is here presented in tabulated form from the year 1881 to the r resent time: Vear. First. Age. Jockeys.
