He had up 119 pounds and ran the mile and an eighth in 1:52. Capt. Kees was his nearest follower at the finish and Juy Fortune third. Capt. Rees also ran a good race, for he was forced back on the lower turn and caused to suffer the loss of considerable ground, which he made up steadily in the stretch and finished fast and gamely. The first serious accident of the present meeting came with the running of the third race, when Red Cross, while racing prominently in the stretch and having a chance to win. snapped her left fore leg suddenly above the ankle and it enforced her destruction. The race in which she started was won by Thorn Bloom, a victor in his last previous race. Backers of favorites had a field day. as most of their choice*, excepting Rifle Shooter in the last race, which proved a rank disappointment, won in easy fashion. The final race brought about an acrobatic i er-formance on the part of Sun Maid, which was iu a running mood this afternoon and scored easily from Rhymer, another outsider. J. H. Rotiseter scored his first victory on a track other than in California, when his Serenest outstayed a good band of sprinters in the three-quarters dash. The filly ran an excellent ra-e and beat Rahu by a neck after a well-sustained stretch drive. MADRAS WINS AT LAST.
