SUNNY SLOPE FOR LAT0NIA DERBY His Good Second to War Cloud in the Preakness Entitles Him to Consideration in Big Race. Cincinnati. O.. May 25. — Sminv Slope, whose close second to A. K. Macombers War "loud in the first section of the preakness Stakes at Iimlico hns attracted to that stoutly-bred colt the favorable attention of eastern horsemen, is among the sixty-eight eligihles for the thirty -sixth running of the SI .-..000 Litonia Derby, which will lie decided tit "Fair Latouiu" this year on Saturday. June 22. It is highly prolmhlc that Sunny Slope, which races in the colors of William Martin, will tie numbered in the field that will go to the post for this rich raw. the winning of which is as much coveted, liecause of the prestige that goes with such a feat, as liecause of its high value. The horse that is successful in emerging the victor from the stamina testing struggle of one mile and one-half, that places the Latonla Derby in a class by itself among three year-old races on this side of the Atlantic, must possess speed and endurance of the highest order. There is no better badge of courage and stamina to lie had on the American turf, than goes with the winning of this race and that is why breeders and owners of high-class three-year olds are alwavs so anxious to win it. The list of its winners since its institution in 1SS3 contains the names of many illustrious horses and seldom has it happened that any but a high-class horse has succeeded in carrying off the honors in the particular race. At this writing, fonr weeks in advance of the running of the race, it looks as though it would be contested by a wonderfully good field and one that will lie in keeping with the best traditions of the rai-e. From present indications the field will be re-cruited from such promising material as Kenneth 1. Alexanders F.scoba K J. Austins Jim Heffer-ing. R. L. Rakers Tacola. O. A. Bianchis Lucky B.. J. E. Maddeus Kverest. Gallaher Bros. Sewell Combs. Willis Shariie Kilmers Exterminator winner of the Kentucky Derbv and Sun Briar. George W. Lofts Pap-p. George J. Longs Freecutter. T. C. McDowells American Eagle, William Martins Sunny Slope, Andrew Millers Recount. D. Raymonds Holllngei- and John W. Schorrs Jas. T. Clark. There is t possibility that stables like those of Commander J. K. L. Ross, Harry Payne Whitney, Jeff-Tson Livingston and W. H. Baker, all of whom made numerous nominations for the race, may have representation in it, although none of the eligible* from these stables has been showing Derby form iu the racing that has taken place so far this year. In any event, it is assured that it will be a great race and the chances are that it may lie the greatest in the history of Derby racing at Latonia. — a
