PIMLICOS TEMPTING AUTUMN PROGRAM Richly Endowed Stakes and Valuable Overnight Purses Provided for Eleven Days Meeting MeetingBaltimore Baltimore lid August 17 According to the program just announced by the Maryland Jockey Club for tins November race meeting at picturesque old Pimlico track 105000 will be distributed among the horsemen whose thoroughbreds compete for the races offered from day to day This will be an average of nearly 10000 a day for eleven days The total amount that will l e distributed in stakes will bo 72000 No overnight race will have a smaller value than 1000 in added money moneyThe The most valuable of the Pimlieo fixtures to be renewed will be the Howie Cup 10000 added one mile and a half the Manly Memorial Steeplechase 10000 added two miles and a half the Walden Stakes for twoyearolds 5000 added one mile Piiiiiico Autumn Handicap 5000 added one mile and a quarter and the Klkridge Steeplechase 3000 added These stakes which are to be decided this coming fall will close on September 25 along with the 1imlico Nursery a twoyearold nice of four and a half furlongs that will pay 1500 in added money to he run next spring springThe The Elkridge is a steeplechase for threeyear olds and it will be the only nice of such value decided on an eastern track in the autumn Because of the participation in war of so many members of the Piping Bock Association there will be no Locust Valley amateur meeting consequently no renewal of the 3000 Harbor Hill Steeplechase However it is a safe gamble that there will be plenty of threeyearolds for the Klkridge There are upward of a hundred threeyearolds of better than average quality schooling for the steeplechase field in various parts of the country now As in the past the Maryland Jockey Club will pay par ¬ ticular attention to steeplechasing it being their purpose to offer at least one crosscountry nice each day The best band of jumpers that the year of 1917 developed took part in Pimlico steeplechas ¬ ing last fall and the Manly Memorial which was won by Capt Joseph E Davis Texasbred fencer Brooks was easily the best crosscountry event of the year Last fall when the Bowie Cup was run for the first time as a 10000 race it brought to the post a field of brilliant racers and developed into a remarkable duel between Westy Hogan and Omar Khayyam both racing under the silks of Wilfrid Viau of Montreal each striving to beat the other iu which Westy Hogan the supposed sprinter de ¬ feated Omar Khayyam the stout longdistance run ¬ ner in 113115 the fastest time at the distance ever made in Maryland MarylandThe The unusually large number of good twoyear olds insures a brilliant renewal of the Walden which will be this year as it has been in the past the greatest longdistance event of the year for young thoroughbreds War Cloud which was de ¬ stined to win one of the divisions of the Preak ness and then go to New York and defeat Jack Hare Jr and Johren iu the Dwyer Stakes at Aque ¬ duct won last years renewal of the Walden from Tippity Witchet and The Porter in 140
