STARS IN GAME CLASHING Sun Briar Defeats Johren by Inches in the Travers Stakes Comes from Behind and Wins in inLast Last Stride Passing Shower ShowerFirst First in Spinaway Stakes By J L Dempsey DempseySaratoga Saratoga N Y August 17 W S Kilmers Sun Briar attained his crown of king among the three yearolds he has met this season when he triumphed this afternoon in sensational style over Johren and War Cloud in the historic Travers Stakes at a mile and a quarter and generally accepted as the final test for threeyearold supremacy True Sun Briars margin of victory was only by inches and he was in receipt of six jwunds concession from Johren but to close observers it appeared as if inn Briar could have with more alert riding won by a big ¬ ger margin If the same race was run over again with only Sun Briar and Johren making the contest the Kilmer againThe representative would win right back again The race which had a net value of 7700 was the headliuer of a splendidly arranged program and brought out the recognized champions in the three yearold division Sun Briar and Exterminator carrying the Kilmer silks were always most favored with little to distinguish between Johren and War Cloud in the matter of partisanship both having an ample array of followers There was little motion wasted at the barrier with Sun Briar and Ex ¬ terminator quickest to settle in their stride War Cloud following and Johren close up but in close uarters and a sufferer from interference on 4he first turn but he quickly recovered Jinapp on Sun Briar appeared anxious to take a good early load and in this he was helped some by Schuttin gers action on Exterminator in forcing War Cloud wide on the turn leading into the backstretch and when the pair went wide Robinson took advantage of it to send Johren up with a rush and it was only a little later that he wrested the lead from Sun Briar The move took Knapp by surprise and it appeared doubtful if Sun Briar would l e equal to the task of overcoming the two lengths lead that Johren had attained attainedKnapp Knapp however had by this time recovered his equipoise and began nursing Sun Briar without un ¬ duly allowing him to fall back further On the stretch turn there was no material change in the order of the quartets running Johren leading and going well Sun Briar just starting his final chal ¬ lenge and War Cloud and Exterminator out of it so far as their winning chances was concerned Sun Briars final effort was a telling one and lie re ¬ sponded resolutely Slowly but steadily he de ¬ creased Johrens lead and when a sixteenth out Kqbinson realizing his danger began his reserve drive plying his whip in strenuous style but Sun Briar now fully settled to his task and aided in no mean degree by the earnest endeavors of Knapp got up in the final strides amidst a terrific din of frenzied encouragement to win by a head War Cloud rallied in the stretch but was six lengths from the pair at the end endSTAYER STAYER AS WELL AS SPRINTER SPRINTERBy By his performance this afternoon Sun Briar dis ¬ pelled the doiibt whether he could go a considerable route by overhauling Johren a proved stayer After the latter had passed into the lead it plainly indicates that the Kilmer crack is a stayer as well as a sprinter At any rate he will enjoy a big following if his owner elects to send him to the post for the Saratoga Cup which is at a mile and threequarters threequartersAs As a secondary feature was offered the Spinaway Stakes for twoyearold fillies which had a net value of 5450 Seventeen youngsters started in it and the unwieldy field made for anything but a true run contest particularly when the dash was at five and a half furlongs The winner turned up in J II Bosseters Passing Shower which showed more tractability at the post than is usually her custom It helped her to get away with tin first flight She maintained her position well until straightened away for th stretch sprint where she drew out decisively to win going away from Lady Boseluid and Tuscaloosa with Blushing Beauty following followingThe The Bed Cross Subscription Steeplechase in which the subscribers and the association each jackpotted 1000 resulting in a fund of 10400 counting the jockeys mite of 100 all to go to the American Bed Cross fund furnished an interesting spectacle with W B Coes Bet the ultimate winner from Shannon Biver running for the occasion in G W Lofts colors with Dramaturge in third place The heretofore steady Weldship was given the call and much to everyones surprise came to grief at the fifth hedge when he failed to raise properly and went down in a heap Another to go down at the same hedge but in the later round of the course was Garter Smoot and Bowan the respective riders of the fallen pair escaped witli a shaking up Weld ship was in the lead at the time that he fell and his elimination gave Shannon Biver and Bet oppor ¬ tunity to dispute for the lead the pair alternating in showing the way with Dramaturge following closely The latter with a better ride might have been the winner Owner Coe retains a handsome piece of plate also added by the association to commemorate the victory of Bet in the nice niceThe The Sanitoga Association this afternoon was called upon to entertain what was probably the record attendance at this palatial course The weather was an added factor towards enjoyment for the crowd for it was exquisite in every respect The bracing atmosphere was partially responsible for the fail ¬ ure of some of the cracks to lower track records the mile and a quarter mark of 202Ji established by Boamer on the opening day was expected to go bv the boards but the best Sun Briar could do was to run a full second slower though the 203Vr he covered the distance in is decidedly creditable creditableBetting Betting activities of the afternoon were on a par with the banner conditions otherwise and as most of the winners were extensively backed the majority in pleasureB the throng combined profit with their pleasure B F Carmens Louise V started the backers off in good style when she led home the band of platers that tried conclusions with her She was helped to victory by staying close to the inner rail while most of the others lost ground at various points by going somewhat wide The struggle for place honors in this was a thrilling one with the entire field in back of the winner landing at the finish heads apart apartSmart Smart Money a former winner here again maflo maflogood good but this time It took Robinsona best effort effortto to succeed In overhauling Wise Man with Valais Valaisi i pressing the pair closely Dick Willlama was given I Continued on third page STARS IN GAME CLASHING Continued from first page extensive backing in the race but he was never prominent prominentThe The closing race fell to Keen Jane which had followed Esquimau closely until rounding into the stretch where she took up the running and won in a hot finish Sam Louis thought her in too cheap at 1000 and bid her up to 1600 but she was retained witli an advance of five dollars dollarsPassing Passing Shower and Lady Rosebud which finr ished first and second respectively in the Spinaway Stakes are both sired by Ormondale and their dams are botli owned by John E Madden Lady Rosebud is a half sister to Old Rosebud RosebudOwner Owner Rosseter who is at present in San Fran ¬ cisco Cal aiding in government work was greatly interested in the performance of his Passing Shower and sent trainer Strate a message early requesting to be advised immediately as to the outcome of the race Trainer Strate complied the instant Passing Shower had crossed the finish in front of the others othersII II D Brown was a visitor enroute from Wash ¬ ington to Lake
