Despite his burdensome imixist Hilly Kelly was regarded ji mcst favor and W K Coes good looking Yo ller colt Sweep On was more thought of than the others There was considerable man ¬ euvering at the barrier and it entailed a delay but when Ihey were dispatched it was in good alignment with Billy Kelly away forwardly but for somo reason Sande could ifoTIet lllln to keep rp with the leaders and he was buffeted about con ¬ siderably in the early miming Sweep On had mean ¬ time moved into a gcmd lead and wa going fast and steadily seemingly a sure winner iiarticularly after lc had rounded tin turn for liome At this juncture JJiliy Kelly still had failed Jo shake off interference mil it was necessary for him to make an extra wide Kvrepp to secure a clear course courseTo To lose the extensive amount of ground that going vide entailed looked like inviting sun defeat but Fande lia l no alternative and the colt came around his field ami one clear and settled for tin final sprint Billy Kelly seeme to take on new speed and responded readily to his riders urging An eighth out from the finish JSilly Kelly had moved into second place with Sxviep On only i length in advance and right here Billy Kelly showed true mettle and von his crown With rare gameness h buckled dovn to his work Instinctively he knew he had to wear the leader il Aii and the crowd seemed to sense liis straining effort and cheered wildly their encouragement encouragementA A sixteenth out Sweep On still had a margin of a half length but Fairbrothcr foresaw defeat for he resorted to the whip Sweep On momentarily re ¬ sponded but to no avail Hilly Kelly would not IK denied and won amidst thunderous cheering The spectators while Hilly Kelly and Sweep On vcrc staging their sinewstraining duel neglected the action of the other starters Colonel Livingston was put to an equally gruelling drive to outstay the others for thirl idace but lie gained that place by a splendid sprint in the last eighth and only for the fact that lie like his companion color tinier had been forced to come wide on tlm stretch lura might have Iteen the winner Tin stake had a net value to the winner of 34 ll llThe The oss establishment made it a double for the afternoon when Valais won in the succeeding race a mile and a quarter Valais raced to his best 111 and was in the lead after going the first half nile Huckl ird taking seconJ place and Conduit third The showing of Lit tie Nearer in the race was jrnor and occasioned considerable adverse criti ci m mFAVORITES FAVORITES PHOVE ILLUSIVE ILLUSIVEHackers Hackers of favorites again fared distressingly for Hilly Kelly only rewarded their confidence The maiden twoyearolds in the opening nice proved a difficult problem and only invited small backing backingKligs Kligs and Fret cutter were liked in order but Flags found the distance too far and Freccutter was never prominent which accounted for Tombolo landing the purse Tombolos recent races were nothing to enthuse over and what support he re ¬ ceive came from the sharpshooters sharpshootersA A K Macombers 1orte Drapean was the fav ¬ orite one in the last race but the best he could do was to land in second iilace LInlirmiere winning easily easilyA A L Aste claimed Poilii from the first race After the second the Woodland Stock ained their Henevolent by claim for l2Ki ml the trenl to witness Hilly Kelly run in the Grab Hag Handicap The colts former owner W F 1olsou also had a curiosity to witness his race and came from Huffalo this morning morningJoe Joe Byrne who has incurred the starters dis ¬ pleasure so often during the current season was liermitted to resume his saddle activities through the lapse of his late suspension suspensionSheriff Sheriff Daniel J Griffin of Kings County was en interested spectator in the clubhouse enclosure enclosureIt It has been definitely decided that Itoamer will J ridden in his test against Salva tors mile time Iiv jockey Schuttinger If Itoamer is successful in iiis effort owner Miller will receive plate of rOO v 4l tie Itoamer will make his trial after the run juing of the third nice providing conditions are u owner Millers and trainer Goldsboroughs liking likingAfter After Valais Avon the fifth race Sam Lonis ad ¬ vanced him from an entered price of 1500 to 811700 l ut he was retained for an additional 5 I id by trainer Hedwell Continued on third page BILLY KELLYS GRAND SACE Continued from first page Roamer spent yesterday in his comfortable stall at Horsa Haven dreaming of the morrow when he may have dethroned Salvntor as the holder of the American record at a mile All that is necessary for the accomplishment of this feat in the opinion of the experts is a duplication of the weather of today though perhaps a warmer sun would be a contributing influence in setting a new figure for the distance at this point pointInterest Interest in the trial is great and among todays arrivals to see it was trainer Matthew Byrnes of Katontown New Jersey who prepared Salvator for all his races racesI I just wanted to soc how Roamer would do it said Byrnes this morning Tracks have improved Kinco Salvators day but I am unwilling to admit that Ronmer or any other horse had greater speed than SaIvator possessed great as Mr Millers champion has shown himself to be Three days be ¬ fore he was to run against Tenny in the Champion fttakos Jit Momnouth Park I worked Salvator over the old course a mile and onehalf in 231 After ¬ wards I was afraid that I had gone too fast and on the morning of the race in order to see if he had his speed I took him out with Firenzi and told the boys to whip them out an eighth of a mile The mare ran it in 11 M seconds and the horse in 10 seconds Salvator could run far tind fast and I have never seen his equal Had Murphy ridden him iu the trial he would have shaded 135 considerably Bergen rode him with a loose rein and long stirrups and Salvator wanted somebody to pick his head up When Salvator made his test twentyeight years ago there was no starting barrier and when Jimmy Rowe dropped the flag the horsu was running at his best Roamer will have the same privilege to ¬ morrow and it should be helpful There have been times In the past decade when the turf had repre ¬ sentatives deemed capable of setting new figures at a mile but none has beeu more consistently chosen for the attempt tlian Roamer If is doubtful whether the turf has ever had a race horse with more devoted friends than Roamer which has been a gold mine for his owner liaving won upwards of 80000 in stakes and purei since he was ac ¬ quired from Woodfonl Clay In spite of all his racing he is apparently as sound as the day he was foaled The condition of his feet and legs is amaz ¬ ing as no horse living or dead has worked as many miles faster than 140 or mile and an eighth in 152 or better He is a glutton for work and wont give his best unless he is treated in spartan fashion
