THE PORTERS FIRST SARATOGA RACE By J K Jeffery JefferySaratoga Saratoga X Y August 20 Edward Bcale Mc ¬ Leans good threeyearold The Porter which has yet to face the barrier here will make his local debut in the iJIUOO Surauac Handicap a mile dash exclusively for iiorses of his age which is scheduled for decision tomorrow and for which he Ms being especially pointed In this race he will have to meet seme of tiie best of the threeyearolds in training hen his prospective opponents including such stars of the racing firmament as John San fords Tipnity Witchet A K Macombers Motor Cop Major August Belmonts Lucullite A L Astes crack filly Eyelid and one or two others of scarcely less renown renownIt It had been expected that Col W E Applegates good threeyearold Jack Hare Jr might make his only appearance of the Saratoga season iu this race but it is understood that trainer Frank D Weir has come to a lecision not to race the son of Marathon here but to reserve him for fall cam ¬ paigning on the New York tracks and iu Maryland MarylandDoubt Doubt of his ability to stay the longer distances influenced trainer Weir to make only two engage ¬ ments for the colt here when the Saratoga stakes closed earlv in the season lit will be abundantly provided with fall engagements however and his trainer has a strenuous campaign in mind for him before he goes into winter quarters quartersJack Jack Hare Jr lias been thriving famously since his arrival here as most horses do under the revivi ¬ fying influence of the air and water and trainer Weir Ixlieves he will race more effectively as a result of the respite he has been enjoying here under such ideal conditions conditionsKay Kay It Miller who has been spending a week or so in the vicinity ws a visitor at the track yester ¬ day having come over to confer with H D Browne over matters concerning Cuban racing in which lie expects to participate during the coming winter as usual Mr Miller is associated with George It Bryson in the ownershp of the horses that have been racing this year in the name of the Potomac Stable These horses nunilieriiig some seven or eight have been shipped from New York to Havre de Grace to await the opening of Maryland racing in which they are destined to participate until the time comes for shipment to Cuba Mr Miller re ¬ cently established himself in the automobile business at Washington where lie conducts a large garage
