ROUGH DAY FOR CHAMPIONS Weldship Dunboyne and Cudge All Go Down in Defeat Sweep On Takes the Grand Union UnionHotel Hotel Stakes and Midway the theMerchants Merchants and Citizens Saratoga X Y August 21 Todays racing will linger in the memory of the big crowd for the down ¬ fall of champions Weldship Duntwyne and Cudgel a trio held in high esteem in their respective races found their Waterloo and in only one case that of Cudgel could there be offered an excuse for defeat defeatIn In Cudgels case there is every reason to believe that his undoing was in a big measure due to the heavy and unexpected storm that came shortly after the running of the Grand Union Hotel Stakes and flooded the track making the going sticky and slip ¬ pery Cudgel while he can run well in such going has never shown excessive ability in it and with this was coupled the fact that he was carrying 13 pounds and ridden by Kummcr who is not familiar with his running pccularities and wasted the horses reserve speed by forcing him to maintain a fast pace in the early running The winner turned up in Midway which was favorably weighted and showed the best crformanee of any he has done at this meeting He was always well up with the leaders and in the stretch racing came away easily Eyelid running minus blinkers this afternoon proved herself a right good filly by hanging on in game fashion and I eating Cudgel for second place Only five tried conclusions in the Merchants and Citizens Handicap Cudgels prowess having served to keep many from starting He was always most in demand but Midvvay was not without supporters The race was run in a heavy rain storm The win ¬ ners share of the stakes was 2ti7 2ti7The 2ti7i i The Grand Union Hotel Stakes with its tradi ¬ tions and great value attracted to the post all the Highly regarded twoyearolds excepting Billy Kelly which was not an eligible Another absen ¬ tee from the race was It T Wilsons Hannibal which is being reserved for the Futurity Stakes share of the purse at his mercy That he did not win was not the fault of his rider Byrne for lie used rough tactics and forced back some of the contenders during the early running but it served no puriiose for DunlKiync with all his ad ¬ vantage failed dismally in the stretch racing anil did not finish among the placed ones Sweep On under W K Coes silks and ridden by the western rider Gentry triumphed after a sensational stretch sprint to win from the poorly ridden War Marvel with Lady Rosebud taking third place Sweep On was one of the principal sufferers by the interfer ¬ ence that came Jn the early running and at one stage appeared hopelessly beaten but Gentry perse ¬ vered and the colt responding in game style through the last quarter came from far back with a sMisu tional sprint and got up in the last twenty yards Dunboyne raced close with the leaders Lady R we bud and War Marvel until in the stretch where lie found his 130 pounds impost more than he could manage and tired perceptibly near the end endTHE THE E200K BEATS WELDSHIP WELDSHIPThe The addition of Reddest in the Beverwyck Stee ¬ plechase spoiled a match race between AVeldship and The Brook but it ultimately resolved itself into a battle between the pair for Reddest after going one round of the course lioltcd at the Liver ¬ pool The Brook look Weldship into camp in easy fashion and his success over the former acknowl ¬ edged steeplechase champion marks the decisive passing of Weldship from the first rank in his division He has had three opportunities here and his followers have been loyal and steadfast but after his race this afternoon they were forced to acknowledge that he is no longer the doughty champion he formerly was wasBackers Backers of favorites fared worse tins afternoon than on any previous day the six choices going down in steady defeat In some instances their showing was unduly poor Their downfall started with the opening nice in which Commander J 1C Ij Ross Dottie colors of Thos Clyde won easily from Youneed and Wyndover WyndoverWeldship Weldship Dunboyne and Cudgel were the next offending choices and Lazy Lou followed in the fifth ace the winner in this
