By Right of Inheritance and Deeds Deedson on the Turf a Truly Wonderful WonderfulHorse Horse Is the Ever Green GreenROAMER ROAMER In 1914 when Roamer was a threeyearol l Daily Racing Form said of him himFrom From his racing as a twoyearold it could not easily be discerned that Roamer was destined to be the champion three yearold of 1914 Yet such he was and is beyond dispute In advance of the fact his brilliant rob coulol have been assigned as a matter justly in ex ¬ pectancy for the grand twoyearold Old Rosebud Then after the gigantic Luke HcLuke had carried off the Kentucky Handicap in such extraordinary time and fashion last May no one could have impugned the judgment of him who declared the real star of the year had been disclosed One cannot help in indulging in conjecture as to what the outcome would have been had these two spbndid young thoroughbreds not been disabled so early in the mimic warfare of the race track In the face of the facts ccnjecture does not go far but it can now be set down as a certainty that even had they remained sound and in top form they would have found in Roamer a formidable antagonist and maybe a conqueror It is recorded that long ago n English Napoleon of the turf was asked What is the first requisite of a race horse To which he replied Speed And then what More speed To one cherishing such opinions Roamer would have been a delight for speed in its extreme is his most remarkable character ¬ istic Running well within his capacity and carrying 124 pounds he reeled off the first mile of the Washington Handicap at Laurel in 1 3G To those inclined to mental speculation his might easily lead to wonderment as to what Roamer could do at a mile under favorable conditions over the inordinately fast Juarez track The answer to the suggested query was a long time in coming It was rendered over an even faster track than the wonderfully speedy Juarez course and was emphatic in the extreme In that it shattered Salvators mile record which had stood unapproachable for twentyeight years it was also absolutely revolutionary Not the least wonderful feature of this estab ¬ lishment of a new mark to shoot at by racing stars of the future is the fact that its accom ¬ plishment is due to the remarkably preserved speed of a sevenyearold horse Usually the thoroughbred attains the meridian of his ability to do great things in its fouryearold fornj but Roamer is an upsetter of traditions and precedents Considering the staying blood in his veins and his enormous flight of speed it is quite evident he is entirely capable of setting new and brilliant records at longer distances than a mile Even when a threeyearold he took up 124 pounds and electrified the racing world by running a mile and an eighth in the then un believabb time of 1 49 Off and on since it has been his way to do similar stunning things Now to caj it all come his new Saratoga laurels It might be said right here that while he only carried 110 pounds in his recordbreakng feat it is more than probable that he could have carried his correct weight for age 126 pounds and wiped out the Salvator record as easily as lie did under the lesser weight weightOpportunity Opportunity is a great thing in the affairs of horses as of men To Roamer was given Uie opportunity to do a great thing and he did it gallantly Yet it is not to be doubted that under the same conditions of weight track and weather Old Rosebud could have done as well or belter Nor are there lacking indications that an older veteran of international fame Borrow would have been equal to the same task in his day Even this year ten years old as he is he ran the first mile of the Brookdale Handicap in 136 Great as a man or a horse may be there are always others and mayhap other others capable of amazing things thingsRoamer Roamer had one black letter year That was when he was a fiveyearold in 191G and was only able to win one race out of thirteen attempts Otherwise his career has been consistently that of a truly wonderful race horse He was bred to be such He is an American but his blocd is purely a commingling of the best Australian and English lines His grandsire Trenton vas one of the greatest race horses which ever trod an Australian race course and was a suc ¬ cessful sire His dam is by Bona Alsta sire of the world famous stallion Cyllenc daddy of the Epsom Derby winners Cicero Minoru and Lemberg as well as a host of other highclass winners in England and later on in Argentina By right of inheritance it is no wonder he is able to race up to his distinguished lineage and relationships It is not given him to reproduce his kind when his racing days shall end but he has a handsome younger halfbrother in The Wanderer which may have that good fortune in reserve Reamers condensed record and his admirable pedigree are as follows followsYear Year Age Starts 1st 2nd 3rd Unp Won 1913 2 17 4 6 1 6 S R 480 22 92711 92711J J Longbow Tosophilile I
