BELMONT PARK TOMORROW Autumn Racing Over Metropolitan Tracks Begins Labor Day Attractive Program with Three ThreeStake Stake Features Arranged Arrangedfor for Opening Day By C T Fitz Gerald GeraldNew New York August 31 Gotham will welcome the thoroughbred Monday when racing under Jockey CJlib su Tvision will I e relieved at Belmont Park tin superb home of the Westchester Racing Asso ¬ ciation Those New Yorkers who were n t fortunate enough to witness the recordbreaking feats which made the season at the Spa so notahle will see the horses whiih recorded turf history there in the various events on the program which has been pre ¬ pared for the entertainment of Xew Yorkers and the host of visitors which throng the metroiwlis in the autumn autumnThe The Futurity and the Lawrence Realization Stakes for two and threeyearolds respectively as in former years are the chief races to be decided dur ¬ ing the twelve days and no trials between horses of blood in the United States surpass them in point of widespread interest although there are other events which antedate them This is particularly true of the Futurity because of its value and the prestige which accompanies a victory in it A sentimental inality is derived from the fact that 1750 is di ¬ vided between the breeders of the first second and third horse and this condition arrests the atten ¬ tion of very man woman and child which has to lo with a breeding farm farmFrom From the day that the newly born foal stands tiVmVing in the sunlight by the side of its dam in a cozy box with its litter of straw or mayhap in a blue crass pasture starred with dandelions he or she is an object of the greatest solicitude If the juvenile is sold at auction and becomes the prop eri of another the interest is still sustained be ause of that breeders premium As a matter of fact Futurity day has as prominent a place on the calendar of every breeder of thoroughbreds in the land as Christmas or the Fourth of July The winner of the big prize is flashed to every town and hamlet and if our colt wins there is an aronia of mint and a general air of rejoicing at the farm where the fortunate youngster first saw the light It trebles or quadruples the value of the dam It also lends encouragement to the breeder to con ¬ tinue in a work whose importance to the economic future of the country is becoming more apparent every day If more of the big turf prizes or for that matter every stake race on all our programs carried some reward for the breeder of the winner or better still the first three horses as in the case if the Futurity the breeding industry would gain many recruits recruitsIn In former years when the race was a feature of the Coney Island Jockey Club the Futurity was run during the ojKMiing days of the meeting With the Hopeful Stakes slated for the last day at Saratoga the VsIcliester directorate lias acted wisely in making flu Futurity the feature of the closing day and Saturday September 14 will be the lay of days in racing circles this year yearNOTED NOTED rUTUEITY WINNERS WINNERSMany Many great twoyearolds have won the Futurity since it was first run for in 1S8S when Proctor Knott ridden by the negro Pike Barnes took the measure of Salvator and twelve others and earned for Sam Bryant of Kentucky 40900 The prize reached its crest in value in 1890 when Au ¬ gust Belmont the father of the present chairman of the Jockey Club ran first and second with Potomac and Masher the winners share on that occasion being nmr When His Highness an ¬ other Nurserybred youngster won for David Gid ¬ eon the following year ilC75 was his reward Among the other noted iierfonners which gained fame by winning the Futurity were Morello Domi ¬ no Ogden Artful Colin Maskette Novelty Pen ¬ nant and Camyfire The eligibles this year include Dnnboyne Sir Barton Hannibal Thunderstorm Vindex Bayard Pigeon Wing Kerensky The Boy Rodgers Mormon Pride of India Klfin Queen High Time Star Hampton Lads Love Lady Rose bud Star Realm Purchase Madras Gingham Batter Cake Lightning Texas Special Joyful Ginger and Sea Way The cracks Billy Kelly and Sweep On are conspicuous by their absence The dam of the former was not nominated by Jerome B Res pess fortunately for those who have entries while Sweep On was declared automatically when that fine type of sportsman Schuyler L Parsons died It is a quite open nice as it stands on paper much more so than in 1917 when George W Lofts Papp by his fine performances at Saratoga earned the right to favoritism and it would not be sur ¬ prising to find a maiden getting liome in front frontThe The Lawrence Realization to be run on Saturday next is a real threeyearold race as it is at one mile and fiveeighths It has an added value of 1000 and the fact that Johren Sun Briar War Cloud Hand Grenade Motor Cop Papp Liicullite and other threeyearolds that have shown their iiiality are engaged warrants a good performance Sun Briar is destined for retirement to the stud according to his owner and the handsome French bred colt may be eliminated from the above but if Walter Jennings should send Motor Cop out as pacemaker for either Hand Grenade or War Cloud Johren would not gain a bloodless victory The Champagne Stakes will divide the honors with the Realization on Saturdays card It is at seven cighths and is an oldtime race for twoyearolds having been taken from the Jerome Park program Hairing Billy Kelly all the cracks are engaged and the race should decide the question of which is the second best twoyearold of the year yearThere There is an abundance of material in the three stakes to be run Monday to furnish a good days sjK rr The handicap division will resume their lmttles for supremacy in the Itelmont Park Autumn Handicap at one mile and an eighth the best of the twoyearold fillies will meet in the Tomboy Stakes at five and a half furlongs and the Broad Hollow Steeplechase at about two miles will bring out the pick of the crosscountry brigade On Tues ¬ day the Jerome Handicap for threeyearolds at a in lie will be decided Johren War Cloud Hand Grenade The Porter Eyelid Papp and Flags are on the eligible list listThe The Miueola a selling race for twoyearolds is down for Wednesday while Thursdays feature will include the Autumn Highweight Handicap for ill ages at threequarters The latter has all the flyers engaged Polymelian and Old Koenig will be absentees because of lameness but Flags Kathleen P P1 Naturalist and other fleet sprinters should make the contest worth while Tlie Great Neck Handicap at a mile and a quarter will be the feature of Fridays program Belmont programBelmont Park one of the loveliest spots in the world is at its best in the early autumn and its paddock is tinapproached by any in this country be ¬ cause of the superb trees which are its distinctive features Taken in conjunction with the Turf and Field Club so cozily housed in the Manice Manor the entire plant of the Westchester Racing Asso ¬ ciation carries an irresistible appeal to tiiose who want to enjoy a perfect days outing
