BILL Y KELL T S A CHIEVEMENTS CHIEVEMENTSin in the Racing of This Year and andHis His Distinguished Ancestry Among the twoyearolds of this year Billy Kelly stands preeminent None has yet been disclosed to challenge his supremacy In Chicago those who so greatly admired his sire Dick Welles in the days when his marvelous speed was so often displayed over Chicago tracks take high pleasure in his having sent such a superb and overshadowing son to adorn the annals of American racing racingIn In breeding Billy Kelly shows a remarkable intensification of King Tqni blood King Tom was a half brother of the Emperor of Stallions Stockwell and himself a sire of great merit He was a son of Harkaway and the immortal broodmare Pocalioutas Stockwell being by The Baron Pocahontas The male line of King Tom is becoming attenuated in England but through the brothers Dick Welles and Dick Finnell is nourishing in this country But in England lie lives through St Simon his grandson through his daughter St Angela Billy Kelly goes straight back in the male line to King Tom through Dick Welles King Eric and King Ernest Aside from this lie traces back again to King Tom through his dam Glena It might be said in passing flint before producing Billy Kelly Glena had sent his sister Scarlet Oaks into racing and she was as fleet as they make them Glenns King Tom blood comes through King Toms son Phaeton via her sire Free Knight and grandsirc Ten Broeck Once more Billy Kelly goes back to King Tom through Teats Over Tea Rose King Alfonso and Phaeton All around it is a singularity in breeding wortii consideration considerationBilly Billy Kelly made his debut in racing in a halfmile purse race at Lexington April 3 over a slow track It was the first start of all in the race and Col Taylor had such a tall private reputation that he was a GO to 100 favorite while Billy Kelly was at the long price of 005 to 100 in the mutuels But that did not prevent him from winning by a neck from Colonel Livingston in 49 witli Col Taylor a good third Billy Kelly rather rubbed it in on Col Taylors adherents in his next race This was at Lexing ¬ ton May over a fast track at four and a half furlongs The delusion in regard to the excellence of Col Taylor had the effect of sending him to the post a 40 to 100 favorite but Billy Kelly at 885 to 100 made an exhibition of him and beat him by live lengths in 53 It was different three days later in the running of the Idle Hour Stakes at the same distance This time Billy Kelly was an oddson favorite at 65 to 100 and the winner by eight lengths in 55 over a muddy track with Colonel Livingston second and Ginger third May 15 at Churchill Downs he Avon the Bashford Manor Stakes at four and a half furlongs by four lengths in 54 with Col Taylor second and Colonel Livingston third eight others running unplaced His next appearance was at Douglas Park June S in the sixth running of the Spring Trial Stakes at fiveeighths of a mile It was a tragic race for him Coupled with Henry Roberts he was the favorite at 110 to 100 He was penalized and carrying 121 pounds was giving ten or more pounds to every otl er tnrterin the race Great was the dismay and puzzlement when he made no showing in the race and brought up far back Sennings Park winning in G9 with Colonel Livingston second and St Bernard third The fact was that he was so badly injured in the race that he could not be raced again until the Saratoga meeting came on but this important circumstance did not become generally known and he was afterwards considered an exploded phenomenon of early spring racing racingHis His people said nothing and bided their time They knew they had a good twoyearold and after he had recovered from his Douglas Park injury lie was carefully prepared for a campaign at Saratoga There he made good witli a vengeance With one exception he won every race he was started in That he was beaten once was so plainly the fault of his rider that lie was not in the least discredited Ha met and vanquished the best of his age decisively At 10 to 1 he began his campaign there by winning the historic Flash Stakes easily and in running its five and a half furlongs in 105 with 119 pounds up equalled the track record This was on the first day of the meeting Then he took up 127 pounds and won the United States Hotel Stakes at threequarters in 112 beating thirteen of the best with ease Next he met undeserved defeat in the Albany Handicap in which Star Hampton carrying 115 pounds to his 132 beat him by a length at threequarters in 112 solely because of the lack of skill and judg ¬ ment of his rider After this race he was sold to J K L Ross for the stated price of 27500 His first race for his new owner was for the Sanford Memorial Stakes at threequarters over a muddy track This lie won by eight lengths in 114 with 130 pounds in the saddle His last race at Saratoga and his best was in the Grab Bag Handicap at threequarters Handicapper Vosburgh paid tribute to his great nesii by giving him the big burden of 135 pounds Despite this he went to the post an oddson favorite Somewhat unlucky and hampered in the first half mile of the race lie came through tiie homestretch witli a meteoric rusli and overhauling the good colt Sweep On won by a half length in 111 Sweep On carried 120 pounds and witli 118 pounds up Colonel Livingston was third It was a wonderful race and only parallelled by Hamburgs victory in the Great Eastern Handicap at Sheepshead Bay in 1897 and Noveltys in the Renuselaer Handicap at Saratoga in 1910 each of these celebrities also carrying 135 pounds in the races named namedBilly Billy Kelly will probably be seen in further action in the Maryland fall campaign Under the new conditions making the Kentucky and Latonia Derbys of next year races for entire horses he cannot take part in those rich races for threeyearolds a fitting punishment for the stupidity that unsexed him But as long as lie remains sound there will lie races in which he will have his chance to rival the deeds of the great geldings Rosebud Roamer and Borrow His line record to date and his interesting pedigree are as follows King Ernest
