Saratoga N Y August 31 James W McClel lands Eternal the speedy sou of Sweep Hazel Burke scored handsomely over nineteen other two yearolds that tried conclusions in the rich Hopeful Stakes which had a net value of 30150 to the winner by far the richest twoyeareld Rice of the year in the country G W Lofts Daydue landed in second place and A K Macombers War Marvel finished third thirdThe The winner ran as if the best for he was off somewhat in a tangle and it required some time for him to recover but once fully settled in his stride lie gained rapidly on the leaders and after a short brush in the stretch he passed Daydue to score easily After the finish Luusford rider of Daydue claimed a foul against Schuttinger who had piloted the winner His specific charge was that Schuttin ¬ ger had taken hold of Daydues bridle about a six ¬ teenth from the finish and retarded Daydues prog ¬ ress Sclnittinger when interrogated by the offi ¬ cials denied Lunsfords charge and complained that Lunsford had made an effort to seize Eternals bridle but had missed it The officials did not dis ¬ turb the placing Congressman Loft and trainer Max Hirsch respectively owner and trainer of Day due were satisfied that the best horse had won but deplored that such tactics should be indulged in by riders and expressed belief that the stewards should prevent a repetition of it itAVhile AVhile the Hopeful Stakes witli its rich prize was the headliner of the splendid card the interest in a meeting between Johren and Roamer in the Sara ¬ toga Cup over a mile and threequarters route overshadowed the juvenile event The withdrawal of Ticket left it a test between the two horses but track conditions were considered to favor the three yearold and so it proved for Roamer was at all times led by his younger rival and the Whitney colt yas an easing up winner The winners net share of the stakes amounted to 5250 5250The The Saratoga Steeplechase Handicap over the full course was the best contest of its kind of this meeting and it resulted in the victory of St Charl ¬ cote from Bet with The Brook landing in third place The latter might have been much closer to the winner but for Crawfords giving up so soon St 2550C Charlcotes victory netted his owner 2550 C E Miekelwaite scored a double for the after ¬ noon when his Sands of Pleasure and Madras Gingham won successively in the fifth and sixth races Both had little difficulty in outstaying their respective opponents opponentsE E B McLEANS ONLY VICTORY VICTORYThe The opening race went to Sandman II rnnnins in the Edward B McLean silks a deluge at any minute Betting action was the best of the meeting the yrice qnoters having by far the worst of it due to the heavy support for St Charlcote Eternal Johren and the Mickelwaite pair pairThe The meeting just terminated was below the standard of last year in many respects particu ¬ larly in the matter of attendance there being a big falling off in patronage Tills was mainly due to so many having joined the colors and inability of many New Yorkers to take their annual vaca ¬ tion on account of pressing business businessForm Form has been uncertain throughout the meeting1 and the backers are glad the meeting here is over and are looking forward to better results at Bel ¬ mont Park ParkT T C McDowell will precede his stable to Lex ¬ ington tomorrow His horses like many others that were shinped from La ton in failed badly while here but will benefit by their stay The McDowell horses TuesdayOwner will be shipped back to Lexington Tuesday Owner McClelland gave Schuttinger a generous riding fee and trainer Patterson also was benefited in excess of ten per cent of the value valueRoger Roger Minimi who lias been making jocke Lykes engagements since the Brighton Stable pur ¬ chased that riders contract will in future perform a similar service for jockey A Johnson in addition to acting as agent for Lyke LykeW W S Kilmers stable will be rested here until about September 15 when it will l e transferred to Maryland to engage in the fall racing at tracks in that state Kilmer bought this morning a half interest in the filly My Friend which is intended to be bred to Sun Briar and Magic Second call 011 jockey Rummer has also been acquired by the Kilmer establishment for the Maryland tracks tracksGeorge George J Longs horses will have to remain here until Thursday because of inability to secure an express car for their shipment to Kentucky KentuckyEdward Edward B McLeans horses will be shipped to Laurel next Wednesday and be rested there until the opening of the racing at that track trackOldtime Oldtime racegoers were shocked to learn of the death of John McGrath who had been caterer at most of the race tracks around New York for the past thirty or more years McGrath as a young man had been steward of the Brighton Beacli Hotel on Coney Island and the first William EngemUn who owned the Brighton Beach race course in part ¬ nership witli his brother George engaged McGrath to take care of his patrons The character of the senice was so satisfactory that the Coney Island Jockey Club Brooklyn Jockej Club and other racing organizations sought him out and until bis death a few days ago he has been constantly in harness Mr McGrath leaves two daughters and a consider able estate most of it in New York realty He was among the early investors in land on the route of the subway in the Bronx BronxEternal Eternal winner of the Hopeful cost his owner 11000 as a yearling and he has all along been re ¬ garded as one of the fastest twoyearolds in train ¬ ing He was favorite for the United States Hotel Stakes but was away last and never had a chance to show anything Since that race Eternal won in sensational style after his owner had tried to with ¬
