EXTERMINATOR DEFEATS STAR RACERS Scores Over The Porter awj Sunny SJopo in JJfU sational Bace at Laurel Park Laurel Mil October 8 W S Kilmers Ex tenninator defeated Tlie Porter and Sunny Slope in the Carrolltoii Handicap at Laurel Park today and furnished more of a sensation than he did when he carried off the historic Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs early in the spring Exterminator was considered an outsider in todays race the same as he was in Kentuckys big three year old event Sunny Sloi e with his recent victories over the New York tracks to his credit was first choice while The Porter because of his defeat of Cudgel and Omar Khayyam last Saturday was strongly sup ¬ ported The veteran Bill Knapp who rode The Porter Saturday had the mount on Exterminator and immediately with the rise of the barrier sent the Kilmer representative to the front Sunny Slope was in second place closely followed by The Porter while Tombolo made up the rear They raced in that order to the stretch where Sunny Slope showed signs of weakening The Porter then moved up and engaged with Exterminator in a terrific stretch duel but without avail as the Kilmer horse was not to be denied and under Knapps powerful finish was awarded the decision by a small margin It was a wonderful race and botli Knapp and trainer Henry Mclaniel were warmly praised for Extermi ¬ nators victorv Neither was The Porter neglected and it was universally agreed that with riders re ¬ versed the McLean colt would have been returned the winner round Swell graduated from Hie ranks of the maidens when she easily won the opener J W Me Cleliands Phantom Maid the favorite in the nice was eliminated by a slow start and the inefficient riding of Lomas LomasThe The talent were given another setback in the third race when Charlie Leydecker was beaten by Subahdar The hitters success was achieved in clean cut style Pepper was the pacemaker and when he retired in the stretch Subahdar forged to the front and while Charlie Leydecker made a de ¬ termined challenge in the last sixteenth the Triple I Springs Farm representative had little trouble hold ¬ ing him sjifc sjifcSHANNON SHANNON RIVER MEETS FATAL MISHAP MISHAPTiie Tiie running f the steeplechase resulted fatally for the veteran jumper Shannon River He felt and broke his neck at the eighth fence The race itself was a thriller Clootz quickly established a big lead but tired near the end leaving Max Mead ¬ ows and Garter to fight it out In a great finisli Max Meadows gained the verdict by a small margin But for racing wide most of the way Garter would probably have won wonJudge Judge Wingfield made it a double for the Triple Springs Farm when he scored a wellearned victory in the fifth race in which he beat Lytle and Eddie Henry in a game finisli finisliJockey Jockey Knmmer rode his third whmer of the day when he brought Silk Bird home a winner in a sensational finish in the sixth race Hummers other winning mounts were Suhahdar and Judge Wingfield WingfieldJ J It Tliornbr has purchased of Willis Sharpe Kilmer at private sale the twoyearold Charley Thorley Jockey Sande who was taken down with an at ¬ tack of Spanish influenza a few days back has recovered sufficiently to warrant his accepting mounts and he will be seen in the saddle again on Saturday SaturdayJockey Jockey Lunsford is getting along nicely and will be about in a few days Capt daysCapt P 5i Walker who was to have acted as steward at the Richmond Fair was an arrival On account of the prevalence of influence about Rich ¬ mond it was decided to declare the fair off for tills year and several of the stables that shipped there to participate in the racing have returned returnedWilliam William A Porter has about closed with J M Booker for the contract which the latter holds on jockey Sueidman This lad has been riding in particularly good form at Laurel and Havre de Grace and looks tobe the most promising of the hereII younger riders here II D Brown was an arrival from New York and will remain for several days before going to Cuba The announcement of the increase of all of the over ¬ night races and in added moneys to the different stakes has been favorably commented upon by the horsemen and many of them who have in former years laid their charges up for the winter have de ¬ cided to send a division of their stables to Havana this year yearRay Ray Miller who is associated with E K Bryson is a visitor at Laurel He reports that Bry ¬ son is laid up with a cold but will be about again In a day or so Miller has been in the automobile business in Washington since last spring but will dispose of his interests shortly preparatory to sailing for Cuba
