SADDLE RECORD OF JOCKEY W ALLEN Jockey W Allen who took his own life last Wednesday was one of the foremost steeplechase riders of this country for the past ten years Allen was born in Decatur 111 and was about 29 years old He began his turf career as an exercise boy for Stanley Kunz of Chicago and later rode on the flat for T P Hayes of Lexington Ky But Allen was best known as a steeplechase rider taking up that branch of the sport in 190S Altogether he has had 595 mounts Su races through the field quite a record in itself and lias ridden 161 winners and won over 100000 in stakes and purses Allen was the leading steeplechase rider of the country for three years 1912 1913 and 1914 His splendid saddle record is here shown in the following table tableYear Year Mts 1st 2d 3d Unp Amt 1908 38 14 2 1909 44 7 9 1910 50 13 G 1911 74 21 15 1912 1913 1914 1915 1916 1917 1918
