MEMORIES OF BADENBADEN Before the outbreak of the war the fortunes of BadenBaden as an international gathering were revived through the energy of Prince Carl Egon of Fuerstenberg who was a good sportsman He supported sport at Baden His social influence as the laird of Donaueschingen and his love of sport handed down to him by his father invested the pleasant little town with the distinction it had attained ia the days when the Empress Augusta chose the watering place on the banks of the Oos as her summer holiday resort Dupressoir presided over that pretty little Casino where roulette and trenteetquaraute were indulged in by visitors until the pious wave swept over Germany and casinos were washed away gambling being abolished save in private clubs and the casinos of officers French owners in the old days were invited to join the race committee and the club at Baden Entries were invited from French English Belgian and AustroHungariau stables and racing at Baden Baden regained much of its old prestige though threatened with oblivion as the result of the war of 187071 the loss of AlsaceLorraine and the in ¬ demnity exacted as the nestegg of the war treasure in the tower of Spandau Baron de Schickler whose stables and stud were visited at Martinvast on her way to Cherbourg by the late Queen Victoria was induced to permit Semcndria to cross the frontier under the charge of her trainer W Webb and compete for the gold cup offered the winner of the principal race by the grand duke The baron was not present to receive the gift from the hands of the grand duke but it was brought home by Webb who declared that the cup and the added money represented the first instalment of the return of the indemnity to France London Suortsuiau
