COLORADOS WILD BIRD PRESERVE Accident and a natural love for Avild birds and not deliberate intention brought the Lucas Wild Bird Preserve into being Some few years ago at Glenwood Springs Colo E E Lucas now manager of the Hotel Colorado at that resort Avas only the assistant manager and there Avas an unsightly mud hole and mosquito factory on the premises Mr Lucas suggested that if some Avild ducks could be induced to set up housekeeping in the mud hole that they might enjoy eating the mosquitoes anJ incidently that might prevent the mosquitoes from eating up the guests of the hotel So the then manager said Suit yourself Whereupon Lucas proceeded to suit the ducks ducksA A stray flock that arrived on the pinions via the Polunis Colorado Southern Air Line stopped over for lunch and as no one objected they decided to spend the night in the mud hole Finding the accommodations up to the regular standard for all guests the ducks lingered and as is ever the case at Glenwood they firmly made up their minds to leave tomorrow tomorrowTomorrow Tomorrow has not yet come but instead of to ¬ morrow came some eggs Freight on eggs is high since the new rates Avent into effect so the ducks let them lay there in the reeds and finally bits of brownstriped fuzz Avere floating on the pond naw no longer a mud hole Then came Avild geese and the sAvans moved in That settled it the place had the official seal of social approval werent the SAvans riot only stopping but staying there whereupon all kinds of Avaterfowl came in the pro ¬ verbial flocks anil have stayed evor since sinceThe The result is that Lucas lias one of the finest wildbird preserves in America and no wire screens are necessary The Avild birds stay because like of her travelers they find nothing better between the Hio Grande and the Canadian line than camping iu the Colorado Kyckies
