THREAD ANGLERS MEETING Dinner of a Unique Crowd of Eastern Fishers of Everything Hook ana Line Experts of JVev York Moving Into Southern New lork November 27 Albert Martin whose wife is the best fisherwoman and story teller of the Cotton Thread Anglers Club of America spilled the beans as to why the Cotton Threaders hold an annual dinner to which they invite their wives It is to keep their wives in good humor that they may leave them during the summer to catch those wild tackle smashing flounders that misjudge the capabilities of cotton thread threadIn In the mist and rain one early Sunday morning in October onethird of the dinner narty took the last train to the trestle station on the Raunt which is the club s headquarters to get a few hours sleep before they boarded the Bonefish and the Ladyfish which left just before noon for a 1300 mile trip to Florida FloridaSo So desirous were the members to cheer Captain Columbus Jordan navigator of the thirtyfive foot gasoline boat Bonefish and that burly sea dog at the helm of the ocean gashoniid the Ladyfish Cap ¬ tain De Sola Uren many went as far as New Brunswick N jr hoping to make the night train back last night nightWith With Navigator Jordan were James Buchanan crew and cook and with Captain De Sota Uren were J Mayer first mate Heiiry Hartstein second mate and Joe Schlein crew all bound for the Florida Keys and in Hie words of John J Ryan They wont come back until they make the ocean a decent place to fish in inBut But to get back to the dinner which really began the night before Wouldbe diners wandered across lots and no mans land looking for Tronimers res ¬ taurant which is next to the brewery The com ¬ mittee of arrangements did everything nossible to light the way They arranged with the searchlight atop of a big adjacent skyscraper for a guide post to the dinner dinnerHEAL HEAL THREADERS ALL THERE THEREAll All the Cotton Threaders ivere there and the navy was represented by Quartermaster Cotton Threader Walter Vogel and the army would have been represented by Lieut Robert Elder Sylvester except that the lieutenant had an engagement with the kaiser who just then was on his pedestal Charley Grolz the champion hacklehead fisherman of Jamaica Kay and John Pasclike who gives an annual clam fritter feast to all fishermen came up from the Raunt RauntWalter Walter Wilson who still has faith in Jamaica Bay as a place inhabited by fish although lie sailed his boat from his Neponsit home to Ruffle Bar thence to the Raunt and back to Broad Chan ¬ nel a distance of six miles each way and never caught anything was present to say that one day he decided to fish fifty feet from his home and caught the only fish lie took all season one weak fish of five and onequarter pounds and two weigh ¬ ing four and onehalf pounds each eachWhen When President Thomas Cleary announced that Lou Sprung had won two first prizes taking a striped bass weighing five pounds and seven ounces on twentyfour cotton thread the thread that women use for sewing Lou was called upon for a speech speechWell Well I dont know what to say said Lou ris ¬ ing ingYes Yes you do Lou said President Cleary you can graphicallyI tell it graphically I havent had enough to drink yet replied Lou modestlyWell modestly Well you came in rather late you know added apologeticallyThat the president apologetically That is a reflection on the dinner committee Mr President said Ryan the clubs greatest after dinner orator and wit witDANCING DANCING DECK CLEARED CLEAREDWhether Whether climbing slimy rocks or walking over slippery decks makes anglers feet nimble one would judge from John W Moore who never missed a dance May I jiave this djnce dear at vari ¬ ous times asked Mr Martin of Ifis wife but before Mrs Martin could reply Mr Moore would be leading Mrs Martin through the undulating music of Oh Frenchy FrenchyThe The same thing happened when Frank Reynolds the Skate King of Jamaica Bay wanted to dance Smiles with his wife but Moore was ahead of him When George Fantini tried to dance with his wife he found Moore had first choice and was off when tlie first bar of Im Sorry was struck The husbands sat alone smoking cigarettes and trying to look pleasant at Moore MooreBut But while the modern Shiuii Sliami Wabble and Wee Wee Marie caught the fancy of Captain Cleary and Ada Peacherino Riggs old Dad Kemp ton had the time of his life when they sang In the Good Old Summertime SummertimeJoe Joe Baron who won a War Savings Stamp for catching a pound once skate on cotton thread accepted the prize but remarked that there is about as much gameness in a skate Augie Roth to the contrary as there is in a hunk of cabbage cabbageDespite Despite the fact that the Cotton Threaders pa ¬ triotically refrained from fishing on gasless Sun ¬ days they caught on Clarks No 24 cotton thread SCO weakfish 278 flounders 130 fluke 133 striped bass 107 tomcods 20 lafayettes 13 eels 12 skates 7 croakers J sea bass 4 blowfish 4 dogfish which the Federal government has renamed grayfish 2 lobsters 1 sundial 1 herring and 1 tomcod tomcodIn In fresh water Cotton Threaders during the season caught 32 calico bass 20 black bass IS perch 12 sunfish and rock bass each 2 pike and 1 turtle turtleNow Now headed by Navigator Columbus Jordan and Captain De Sota Uren they are on their way to carry the gospel of cotton thread all along the Atlantic coast from the Raunt to Long Key Fla
