EXCELLENT RACING CAREER OF THIS YEARS WIN ¬ NER OF THE MUCH COVETED WALDEN STAKES The colt War Pennant was one of the late developments among our twoyearolds of 1918 There is a semiromance of possibility attached to him When the entries to the Latonia Championship Stakes of 1919 closed it chanced that among his fifty or more thoroughbreds A K Macomber possessed but one yearling so his only nomination to the great race of nest year was a brown colt by Jim Gaffney Maltha which is now var Pennant It would be a singular thing if that solitary nomination should furnish the winner of the 50000 race lint not an improbable thing His birthright of breeding and his racing credentials give him a chance second to none if he remains sound and develops in the right way Subsequent to the closing of entries in the race Mr Macomber bought u number of yearlings which hail been nominated by other owners and is now well represented in the race But in a moment of impulse he sold War Pennant and if the Colt is the destined winner his victory will be in behalf of J K L Ross instead of A K Macomber MacomberThere There was nothing especially impressive about War Pennants early racing although he ran third in his lirst attempt This was in the valuable Tremont Stakes at Aqueduct July i This race was at threequarters of a mile and running the distance in such excellent time as 112 Lord Brighton won it by a length from Sweep On the latter beating War Pennant three lengths for second money Gath Sir Barton Bridesman Star Hampton Different Eyes and My Friend were the unplaced ones Lord Brighton was a 6 to 5 favorite and War Pennant a 30 to 1 outsider In his next three races War Pen ¬ nant was unplaced The first of these was the United States Hotel Stakes of threequarters of a mile at Saratoga August 3 In this he ran an excellent race The then invincible Billy Kelly carrying 127 pounds won in 112 with Dnnboyne 130 pounds second and Tercntia 124 pounds third War Pen ¬ nant 112 pounds was away in the rear division but threaded his way through steadily and landed good fourth having ten behind him of which Eternal was one In the Grand Union Hotel Stakes at the same distance August 24 he did not do so well and finished ninth among thirteen Sweep On win ¬ ning in 112 a half length better than War Manel with Lady Hosebud a close up third August 31 he was one of the starters in the Hopeful Stakes in which he finished sixth Eternal winning with Day due second and War Marvel third Then his luck turned and lie won a series of consecutive victories victoriesThe The first of these was in the fortyeighth running of the Champagne Stakes of seveneighths of a mile at Belmont Park September 7 By reason of being a maiden lie was in light at 105 pounds and ridden by Eddie Taplin at a pound and a half overweight was the favorite at C to 5 He made the running all the way at a fast pace and won by two and a half lengths in 125 with W II Coes fin and somewhat unlucky filly Terentia second with 124 pounds up Questionnaire 125 pounds was a distant third while Delaware and Hurricane ran unplaced Except that it was a display of excellent speed there was no great merit in this performance His next race was in the Babylon Handicap of threequarters of a mile at Aqueduct September 19 Again he had something of a pull in the weights carrying 113 pounds to 125 on Sweep On and 120 on Lord Brighton Sweep On was the favorite at 3 to 1 Lord Brighton and Questionnaire being at 18 to 5 and War Pennant 4 to 1 Waiting tactics were used with him this time and he was saved behind Lord Brighton and Sweep On to midway of the home ¬ stretch where he passed the leaders with a rush and won by three lengths in 112 Sweep On finishing second and Questionnaire third This was a good race and brought him recognition as an improving airl possibly highclass twoyearold twoyearoldIn In his next race the Remsen Handicap of threequarters of a mile at Jamaica October 2 lie for the first time figured as top weight and carried 122 pounds the others being Lord Brighton 119 pounds Sweep On 120 Tuscaloosu and Cirrus 110 each Star Realm 107 Hurricane 103 and Grimalkin 100 He was joint favorite with Tuscaloosa at 3 to 1 Lord Brighton made the running at a fast pace for that track to the last eighth where War Pennant passed him and won comfortably by a length in l13Hs with Lord Brighton second and Sweep On third This was an undeniably good class performance and agnju was Jjjs reputation enhanced The hlsh steom in which he was now held by the racing pub ¬ lic was confirmed when he won the Oceanus Handicap at the same track and distance October 10 On this occasion he took up 12C pounds to 120 on Lord Brighton 118 on Sweep On and 98 on Grimalkin In this instance he ran the distance in l12 and won in a canter by four lengths Again Lord Brighton was second and Sweep On third it now being manifest that these two useful colts were easily out ¬ classed by War Pennant He ran one race at the Empire City meeting on October 24 This was in the Ardsley Handicap over the about threequarters course He had to carry 130 pounds to 124 on Cirrus and had his troubles in defeating the latter by a head but defeat him he did in 109 Ophelia was third beaten five lengths by Cirrus This was War Pennants last race under the colors of A K Ma ¬ comber Along with Motor Cop and War Manel he was sold to J K L Kossfor the reported lump sum of 75000 for the three threeIt It was for his new owner that he achieved the crowning triumph of his career as a twoyearold The Walden Stakes at Pimlico being at a mile is justly regarded as a test of the ability of Its con ¬ testants to stay well and being the last stake race of considerable value for twoyearolds in the east ¬ ern campaign is viewed with solicitude by eastern owners who generally send their best to try for its honors The starters and their weights this year were AVar Pennant 127 nounds Milkmaid 122 Thun ¬ derstorm 117 Translate 112 Cirrus 122 Be Frank 125 War Manel 117 and Mormon 112 The Ross entry of War Pennant War Marvel and Milkmaid was so formidable that it was a hot favorite at 85 to 100 J Loftus rode War Pennant and showing his confidence in his mount sent him out into tin lead directly after the start and holding him there by a small margin to the last eighth then relaxed his restraint sufficiently to let the good colt win by a length in 140 His stablemate the excellent fillv Milkmaid finished a bang up second and U T Wilsons young brother to Campfiro Thunderstorm furnished a surprise in running a close up third thirdWar War Pennant was beaten in his last race of the year but by no means disgraced It was in a purse race for all ages at a mile at Pimlico November 12 Only three started Jock Scot 125 pounds a four vearold meeting the twoyearolds War Pennant 103 pounds and Routledge 105 pounds War Pen ¬ nant was an oddson favorite but Jock Scot was never so good in his life as he was that day and run ¬ ning the distance in the track record time of 139 defeated him by threequarters of a length lengthThe The record and pedigree of this excellent young horse are as follows DoncasttT j
