SHREWD ITALIANS GOLDFISH FORTUNE A fortune made out of goldfish seems an impos ¬ sibility but this curious commercial success has been achieved Several years ago a poor Italian went to England and took up his quarters in a London cellar He came from a village in Italy where the peasants reared goldfish in ponds and knowing them to be a costly novelty in England he wrote to his friends and received a consignment to sell The profits were encouraging and the de ¬ mand kept pace with the supply The friends in Italy dug more ponds and reared more fish not by hundreds but thousands The fish were sold in the streets not only in London but Manchester Liver ¬ pool and other big towns The price fell of course but the demand increased so enormously that the clever Italian made a fortune and is now living in a castle near his native village
