GHOST COSTUME FOOLS CURIOUS BUCK Walter B Cram of Bangor Me while camping nt the head of Second Grand Lake on the east branch with a p rty nl friends to demonstrate to his camp mates his theory that Maine deer are mighty curious animals wrapped himself from head to font in a white sheet and stalked forth into the forest Before long he came to a clearing prob ¬ ably a half mile in area On the far side of the clearing he saw three deer two does and one an apparently magnificent buck for even at that dis ¬ tance lie could see the spreading antlers antlersMoving Moving slowly out into the clearing the wind being in his favor lie emitted a low whistle and then stood motionless The deer threW their heads in the air but instead of disappearing as Cram feared they might despite his theories they began moving slowly toward him himTheir Their actions betokened fear yet so strangely mixed with curiosity that the latter predominated A few feet at a time the animals advanced the noble buck a yard or two in the lead The strange white figure had them hypnotized They feared it yet were unable to resist its compelling influ ¬ ence enceIt It was not until the little herd was within easy rifle shot that Cram threw aside his shroud and fired at the buck dropping him with the first shot shotSimultaneously Simultaneously with his first aggressive motion however the does turned and with lightninglike flash of the white flag were safe in the forest before Cram could give them his attention Still he felt that a 272pound buck was a pretty good days work and hereafter it is said he will do his hunting in ghostlike garb
